carambola beach resort or palms court gardens

hi we are stoppin from our cruise at st kitts from 8am to 6pm.

welike to do some snorkeling and we are wondering if we should spend our day either at Carambola beach resort or palms court gardens.

also how long would it take to get by taxi to either resort and how much can we can expect to pay for the taxi ride.

Palm Court Gardens is in Basseterre and is not a "beachfront" property but they do have a pool - no snorkeling there. It overlooks the harbor. 10 or 15 minute walk from the cruise ship dock or about $8US for a taxi (for up to 4 people)

Carambola is not a resort but a restaurant on South Frigate Bay - 15 minutes by taxi - $16US each way for up to 4 people or $4 per person each way if you have 5 or more in your group. Some snorkeling around the rocks at either end of South Friars Bay but it's nothing to write home about.

Best snorkeling on St. Kitts is at Shitten Bay - you need to take a organized tour to get there as it is only accessible by boat.

The three beaches with "facilities" (rental umbrellas, lounge chairs, restaurants/beach bars, water sports) are Frigate Bay ($12US each way by taxi), South Friars ($16US each way by taxi) and Cockleshell ( $28US each way by taxi). Rates quoted are for from one to four people, if you have 5 or more in your group you'll pay a one-way per person rate of $3US, $4US and $7, respectively.

FYI - As I said in my earlier reply, Carambola Restaurant is located at South Friars - you can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas from them, if you'd like. As an aside, one beach is not better than the other they are just "different" - different in size, view and number of restaurants/beach bars.

Use the "Things to do" link at the top of this page for ideas on other activities/points of interest around the island.

At the other end of Friars Beach (Carambolo is on the west side) is Shipwreck beach bar/restaurant. There is decent snorkeling there along the reef. You can rent beach chairs for a reasonable price of $10us (2 chairs) whereas Carambola charges $30US for 2 chairs and one umbrella). Food at Shipwreck is very good and very reasonably priced. Carambola is more upscale and more expensive.
