water taxi from St Kitts to Four Seasons Nevis

I will be staying at the Marriott in St. Kitts for the first six days of my vacation. I need to check out of there at 10 am. I was able to take advantage of AMEX travel program and booked at Four Seasons Nevis and given an early check in of 12 pm. I think the Four Seasons ferry is at 4:20pm, is there any other way to get there from St Kitts earlier. I guess I am asking if I can take a private water taxi, thank you!

First, check directly with the Four Seasons, they may send their launch for you earlier in the day but bare in mind it's not inexpensive.

If that doesn't work you can take a private water taxi from Reggae Beach Bar (at Cockleshell Beach) but theFour Seasons may not let you use their dock (you'll have to ask them for permission as they restrict use very strenuously). If they won't let you use their dock the water taxi will drop you off at Oualie Beach - from there you'll have to take a taxi for the 10 minute ride to the Four Seasons Resort.

If you do decide to use a private water taxi consider using Fan-Ta-Sea (Captain Winsent's boat - 869-662-1762 or 869-662-7081) as he does a lot of contract work for the Four Seasons and they may be more inclined to let him drop you off at their dock.

Of course, you also have the option of taking the regular passenger ferry from Basseterre to Charlestown - there's one at 9:30AM and another at 12:00 noon.

Thank you so much for the great information. I have left them an email and will wait to see what they suggest. If it is later in the day, it might make sense to go the private route. That way I can start my vacation in Nevis earlier. Thanks!

The 4S (like many places in the Caribbean) is notoriously slow in answering emails. If you don't hear back from them in a reasonable time you might try calling them - you'll get a faster answer - 869-469-1111.

Not sure how much the private taxi will be, but, the Four Seasons is $65/person each way. I think that is crazy since there are four of us. Do you have any idea what Captain Winsent's boat would run?

Again, I point out it's doubtful Winsent (or any other private water taxi) would be able to take you to the Four Seasons' dock. But it is worth asking on the off chance they say "yes" but don't get your hopes up. You'll have to ask the Four Seasons for the permission, not the boat operator. Keep in mind, the 4S normally doesn't let outsiders use their dock. That's probably why they told you about their $65PP service.

As you already found out 4S charges $65/person to use their launch which normally includes a "meet & greet" in St. Kitts, transportation to the dock in Basseterre where they will take your luggage - the next time you see your bags they will be in your room. On their boat which is enclosed and air conditioned you'll be given cold towels and cold drinks and on the ride over they will take care of the check-in process. Once you reach the dock you'll be escorted to your room. You won't get that service on a private water taxi and since 4S provides "launch service" for a fee they have no incentive to let someone else use their facilities "free of charge". The 4S charges top dollar for any service they provide because the majority of their clientele gladly pays it.

So, when comparing prices for the private water taxi with the Four Seasons launch you have to factor in several variables.:

1) The Four Seasons runs between Basseterre and the Four Seasons Dock and normally includes the "meet & greet" service, etc. I pointed out above.

2) The Private water taxi is a small open air boat and runs between Reggae Beach Bar on Cockleshell Beach on St. Kitts' southern peninsula and Oualie Beach on Nevis. Cockleshell is a 20 to 25 minute (about $30US) taxi ride from the airport or Marriott hotel (where you are staying).

3) You'll also have to take a taxi from Oualie Beach to the Four Seasons (figure 10 minutes and another $15 to $20).

4) You'll normally pay $20 to $25 per person (minimum of 4 people) for a water taxi between Reggae Beach and Oualie Beach. It's almost twice the distance from Reggae to the Four Seasons so Winsent will definitely charge you more - probably twice as much assuming he can take you directly to the Four Seasons (which is doubtful) plus a "dockage fee" assessed by the resort. Give him a call at the number I provided above for best answer about his fee. (I know in this internet age most people want to use email but that won't work in this case since he doesn't have a published email address - so use the phone).

Hope this helps with your decision process.

If it was me, I'd take a taxi to the ferry dock in Basseterre (which would be about a third of the cost of taking a taxi to Cockleshell) and take the ferry to Charlestown. It is a very enjoyable and scenic trip and a small fraction of the cost of a water taxi. And then a taxi to the 4S

Hi CaribSurfer:

Do you know what the approximate charge is for the Four Seasons water taxi?

I did the 4S water taxi the last time I stayed there and we were all jammed on a small boat on the way home, the water to the resort we were on their larger vessel. It is not so much about money to me, more about getting there earlier, we can check out very early in the am at Marriott and I have early check in, 12 pm at 4S so why not take advantage? I don't think they have a morning ferry. So maybe I will ferry it over on private and take their ferry when I am checking out for convenience. By the way, we all were sea sick on their ferry going to 4S last time, it was hot, humid and inside made me sick, yuk!

To Lee D - refer to my earlier response with water taxi and 4S launch prices. Just scroll up 4 posts and you'll find it.

Don't confuse the 4S launch with private water taxis. The 4S launch takes you between their dock and the marina in Basseterre. Private water taxis go between Reggae Beach Bar (on Cockleshell Beach, St. Kitts) and Oualie Beach on Nevis.

To tatzidog - there is a morning passenger ferry from Basseterre to Charlestown at 9:30AM and another at 12 Noon. You can get schedules for any day of the week here: http://boatschedule.leytonms.com/index.php

I am staying at Montpelier in May. Is the convenience of the private taxi compared to the public ferries worth the large price difference? We have never been to Nevis and are staying seven nights. Thanks!
