Woman going to Speyside in dive in Jan - with questions

Hello all.

this is really a three part question:

1. Travelling by myself, does anyone has ideas of the Inn - safety - and safety walking around (obviously during the day - daylight hours only). How nice it is etc

Obviously I can safety is an issue here so wondering about this particular place (e.g. I can see it says it is on the edge of the village so might be a bit remote?)

2. is the diving good in Speyside in January? I would love to see some large pelagics (have done a lot of diving in the red sea but not much beyond)

Many thanks for your help

Never, Never, Never go to tobago alone try to visit in a group. Th eyoung men in Tobago think a single woman is always looking for a good hard man so they bother you constantly.

Also if you are staying in the village alone you are setting yourself up.

Thirdly there are other places in town that offer the same rates and you can look at companies who offer group diving/surfing and you can contact them on line. Tobago is not what it used to be you cannnot even walk alone on evenings anymore and admire the night sights.

Tobago is one of the safest carribean islands to visit. The local are all very friendly and the crime rate is very low.

Diving is very good (I recommend contacting Wendy at R&Sea Diving for details).

Try the mytobago website at http://www.mytobago.info/index.php

for info about the island as this website is one of the best I've ever used when planning a holiday!

Beg to differ, Positivek. I've dived Tobago twice and am going back at Easter (you recently helped me figure out how to get there). Yeah, the rainy season brings a lot of runoff from the Orinoco and cuts the viz, but I found the diving quite rich (this was in Dec both times)--the critters like the nutrients brought by that runoff. I also enjoyed the topography as much as the fish. Both times I stayed around Crown Point, and made some day trips to Speyside.

the curl,

You obviously have not read the papers or the travel sites about crime on Tobago. There is a huge amount of crime against the tourists on the island. Why are foreign governments, including yours posting travel warnings about the crime on Tobago?

Yes, crime is everywhere including other islands in the Caribbean. However, on the other islands you seldom hear of violent crime against tourists like you do on Tobago.

(she's probably gone by now...however)

The beginning of Jan, the water was still a bit cloudy as the rough seas were later this year. However, I've spoken to friends and family that dive there regularly and they report that now it is better. January however, is usually not bad, but with changing weather these days, you never know.

I've just had a girlfriend that travelled to Tobago alone, return yesterday and she had no problems with aggressive males, except at Sunday School when she went to use the washroom. She suggests staying away from Sunday school after 10 or 11 p.m. if going by yourself.

Tobago is just like any other caribbean island now as it does have crime now, where at one time it was almost non existant. So when it does happen, it's big news. I've been robbed on other islands but never had any problems on Tobago in over 20 yrs.....so it's all really a matter of preference. Maybe my day will come, maybe not. It's all about common sense and luck I suppose. On one of the islands I was robbed, I was right in the airport!...but I'm not going to go trash the island in their forum. And it was one of Queen L's entourage that got robbed (we were there at the time) and there are reports that they actually left their door OPEN! Please don't casually mention to folks where you are staying.....I heard this all the time from tourists last month. Sitting on the beach with their Ipods and camera's telling a passing friendly vendor what apartment/house they were staying in......funny then the vendor would recommend a good night to go to a 'hot spot' on the island......hmmm. Common sense folks.

Good luck with your choice and enjoy.

Thanks for everyone's help with this. in the end I decided to go to St Lucia becuase I got a good deal. I know the diving may not be up to much but it is quite a singles resort so in terms of safety should be pretty ok and diving is included.

Anyway, thanks again.
