The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort - info?

Hi,

I've just seen a fab deal to Tobago staying at The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort. However, on tripadvisor there are no reviews for this hotel.

Has anyone stayed here or does anyone have any info on what the hotel's like and if it's a good place to stay?

Thanks

Jo

It used to be the Hilton Hotel when it opened in 2000, we stayed in 2001 and loved it including the breezy location. When we lived in Tobago we used the Gym and used to dine there a fair bit, but it closed down not long after the Hilton group pulled out of the island due to shenanigans with the useless government let-downs and broken promises re maintenance.

It has been refurbished and reopened under the daftest name in the history of the old British West Indies islands' tourism industry, universally despised by all except the handful of folks who chose it, but I have heard no reports of any guests yet. Attempts by the government to get a major chain to run it failed (who would trust them again?) so it is now under some kind of quasi public-private joint management enterprise.

Book the deal with a UK credit card and you will be fully protected under the CCA 1974 in the event that you get there and it is disfunctional, or closed. It has supposedly had a "soft opening" of just 50 of the rooms, with the balance due to open this year, but they said that about the new hospital 8 years ago. Life is short and if you have no kids with you, see this as an adventure and a gamble - if it works well, you will have a superb refurbished room and nice fresh staff who still like tourists and possibly several staff to each of you! When we first went, the day after 9/11, my wife and I were the only guests in the hotel for a few days and had amazing service with a couple hundred staff looking after us, it was surreal and made us fall in love with the island - this could be you!

Would be interested to hear your deal. Sounds a good place to visit. Are you a golfer?

I was in Tobago in late November and they were in the process of refurbishing this hotel. When I first got there it looked like it was a long ways away from being finished but it was amazing what they accomplished in the 10 days that I was there. I haven't seen inside the hotel but if they restore it to its original lustre it certainly will be a grand hotel. And it is absolutely on one of the best beaches I have ever seen in my life. I was staying at a Villa at the Tobago Plantations which is the same grounds that this property is on. Having seen other resorts in the area, I would definitely return and try this place - and it"s in a great location. Tobago is absolutely worth experiencing so if you got a fab deal go and enjoy - there is no doubt you will!

Well, Jo

Yesterday was dark and gloomy and we thought of all the funerals we attended in 2011 so decided to be brave!

We have booked two weeks all inclusive, ocean view with Monarch Premium Economy for a total of £3,300 for two people. We were told our holiday is subsidised £100 per person by the Tobago government (ties in with a reply below re the government's involvement with the hotel).

We were originally going to Barbados, but it is getting over commercialised and high end. Our favourite Caribbean destination is the British Virgin Islands but the internal transfers can be gruesome to say the least!

We are hoping that Tobago may have some of the same magic.

For what we have paid it should beat the crap all inclusive we had in Turkey last year!

Any way - here goes - maybe run into you there! (Have booked by Credit Card)

We booked a fab deal seen on travelzoo via tropical sky. Two weeks in June (start of rainy season) all inclusive deluxe seaview room flying Monarch(thats the bit I'm not looking forward to) all for just £2718. We are going for the snorkelling and birdwatching and will want to see the whole island whilst there so will want to hire a jeep if anyone can recommend a company to use please. If theres noone else in the hotel or they've limited the number of guests that will suit us down to the ground. I've heard of nightmare holidays but I doubt very much tropical sky will let us fly out to a closed hotel as someone suggested !!. It looks quite colonial and I'm loving that it has 3 pools especially if its quiet. Lookin forward to Tobago alot

I am flying out with my wife next week for two weeks all inclusive, it was seemingly a very good deal, but that does raise suspicions! We were assured by Sky that the hotel was now open with full facilities, would they lie! In any case, as previously said, if it is half empty, I am not bothered, as long as it's sunny, and I can use the pools etc, it's a bit of a gamble, but couldnt resist, will post on return.
