Is it safe to Bird watch alone?

I will be staying in Tobago for a couple of weeks in September, my two hobbies are birdwatching and Photography. My equipment is expensive and I keep reading about people being mugged for cameras, money, bags, even fishing rods etc So.........

Is it safe, will it be advisable to go with a local guide, or a tour group

Thanks in advance!

Never alone ... not with what's been happening on the island recently.

I would suggest going on a tour or hiring a guide as many avid birders have told me they would not have seen what they did without one. Newton George, Peter Cox and Harris MacDonald are three good ones. I went for the month of Feb and had a wonderful time once again. Enjoy!

For your peace of mind go with a guide. Also, a guide may be beneficial in pointing out species to you, unless you know what you are looking for or looking at.

But I just have to add, if someone wanted to rob you I doubt having a guide would deter them. The guide could also be robbed. Being a local does not give immunity to crime.

Having said that, don't be afraid because you will never venture out and be able to see all the wonderful things on the island.

Thanks to all for replying, it sounds a lot safer to go with a guide. I have emailed Peter Cox to see if he is available when I travel.

Thanks again!

If you get no response to email, try calling as he is often out and about and is much easier to get by phone
