worried

Booked a villa on grafton beach next april, after reading some posts about people being robbed etc, I am starting to get the jitters, were quite seasoned travellers- but could do with some positive experiences or any good info, I realise common sense applies when travelling and have had no real problem in lots of countries we have travelled to, when issues have happened I have always managed to relieve the problem, just want some posts from happy travellers!

Hello

My family spend 4-6 months in Tobago every year. We have never had any problems. You will always hear the negative sides but people forget the many untroubled holidays out there. We love it and have had a villa there for 7 years.

Always happy to offer advice if needed.

The villa is near buccoo. But we don't use that beach we prefer the second bay at castara or at mount irvine

I've just come back but we were staying at Crown Point. We didn't have any problems at all walking round the streets near the hotel. Everyone was very friendly. We went to Sunday School at Buckoo and that was OK too (a weekly steel band concert by the way). Just don't carry credit cards, bags full of goodies, fancy watches or lots of cash around with you. It's probably no more dangerous than many UK inner city areas.

Crime is not a problem, some people are opportunistic and if they see a bag lying around with goodies, in Tobago people would leave it alone, however there is the exception. Good common sense always helps. I have been in Tobago at Villa de Lena in Bon Accord several times. Enjoy yourself on the island, and be aware of your surroundings. It is a lot safer than any other place I have travelled around the world.

We are from near Brighton and went with another family in August this year, stayed in a private villa on the Tobago plantation. Four adults four teens. Had a fantastic time. We were sensible keeping valuables hidden and left all jewellery at home in uk . Had a fantastic time. Recommend castara beach , kings bay cafe for great food and visited Sunday school in Buccoo. Adventure farm was amazing with all the hummingbirds. Have posted lots of reviews on the different places to visit on trip advisor. We were a bit worried before we arrived but everyone really friendly. Did have safety in numbers I guess. Only one occasion when we visited an old fort that we felt people were behaving suspiciously near our cars. We drove all around the island many times over two weeks are all was fine. We took a tour guide for the rainforest walk Hans Phillips is great and won't rip you off . It was quite isolated so glad he was with us. Was a bit deserted on the long walk through forest down to one of the bays so we were vigilant. Drove everywhere at night . As long as you're careful you'll have a fantastic time on this beautiful island . Enjoy!

Really interested reading the posts. My partner and I have booked two weeks in Tobago at Bacolet next year. I have been to Bermuda and Bahamas a few times and am looking forward to a quiet break in Tobago, but when researching, found some horror stories of tourists being attacked...this was four or five years ago 'tho.... We live in the far north of scotland and life is quiet here. Do you think just being sensible (not walking in isolated areas/avoiding wearing flashy watches etc) is enough or is there an increased risk here? A bit jittery about this one. Many thanks. x

hi from cold london , im heading to trini' next year for carinval and im also hoping to visit tobago after carnival to cool down after all my drinking ( jokes ) ive seen all of the reports about tobago. you have to remember your on holiday to enjoy yourself you have worked hard all year saved your money to go on your holiday. my advice is enjoy yourself just remeber to be aware of your surronuding's do not flash the cash . example dont flash $100' t&t notes . break your money down into small denomiations. place your money and credit cards in different locations.do not bring expensive jewellery. and remeber if you are a drinker like me. ( jokes ) dont get drunk . oppurtuninst always look for someone who is drunk and then help themselves to your cash while you are on the floor passed out drunk with your pants down by your ankles ( jokes ). hmmm that sounds like me. ( jokes ) just be carefull and enjoy my second home T&T . lol
