Long trip report.. Leeward Resort and West Bay Club

LEEWARD RESORT

We stayed here for a week and LOVED it. The property is amazing and very new. We stayed in a one-bedroom ocean view suite and the amenities inside the suite were great. It came with every appliance you can think of all CuisinArt. Beautiful Stemware and Plates and Cuisinart pots and pans. Granite countertops in the kitchen, bathrooms and bar area and state of the art touch screen appliances including a sub zero refrigerator. The king size bed was very comfy and the bedding was all top of the line. Flat screen TV and large walk in closet were a very nice addition to the bedroom. You could see the ocean from the bedroom. The bathroom had double sinks with a very deep tub and shower and was very spacious. The living room had a large “L shape couch”, with a flat screen TV, a wet bar area and a full size formal dining room table for 6 guests. The Patio was definitely my favorite part of the whole suite. The views are breathtaking and the yachts that park outside in the Marina area are amazing. The patio is very large and has a round table for 4 guests and a lounge chair that’s perfect for reading a book or watching the beautiful sunset. The suite had great air conditioning and a full size front loader washer and dryer so don’t forget to bring some detergent with you. Although the beach is is a “man made beach” it is very nice and welcoming. There are padded lounge chairs and umbrellas facing the beach area with hammocks off to the side hanging under the palm trees. There is a large volleyball area along with a beautiful pool with plenty of seating poolside and all of the inflatable toys and raft you could want. The resort was very quite I only met one family who I met by the pool that lived there yearly and one other couple staying on vacation. It’s definitely DEAD but a great spot for relaxing and only minutes away from Grace Bay Beach and all of the restaurants. We were given a rental car included in our rate and we used this every night for dinner and for a few trips to the grocery store. The resort is about 15 minutes from the airport and the roads are very easy to navigate on your own. The resort was very clean and maintained. There was a gated entrance with security 24 hours a day, which was very strict about, guests only. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone who wants a GREAT deal in a stunning private resort with great in suite amenities We booked our trip thru vrbo.com here is the listing http://www.vrbo.com/269501 and the owner Colin is great and easy to get a hold of. . Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or would like any pictures. I am happy to help!

RESTAURANTS

Tiki Bar- we went on our first night and from a day of travels we didn’t want anything to fancy. I had the king crab dinner and my husband had grilled tuna. My dinner was nothing special however my husbands were very nice. We had a few beers and the two dinner entrees with tip for $90.00.

Giggles- Ice cream shop with lots of candy. We stopped in for a couple of blizzards and the portions are very large and out total bill was $10.00

Island Scoop Ice Cream- we had some homemade ice cream with the best homemade waffle cones I have ever eaten they were still hot. I had butter pecan and my husband had cherry. The ice cream is more like Italian ice but creamy and our bill was $12.00

Bella Luna- this was the only dining experience we did not care for. The service was horrible starting with the making reservations over the phone to the female owner at the host stand. My husband had a seafood style spaghetti and I had grilled mahi mahi. My food was nothing to write home about and the service was not good. I wouldn’t waste your money here there are two many other amazing restaurants our total bill with tip was $110.00

Coco Bistro- Loved this restaurant. What’s not to like about dining under many palm trees. The service and the owner were a delight. We started off with the grilled shrimp stay on sugar cane skewers, which was very good. I had the grilled lobster and it was huge and YUMMY. My husband had a grilled ahi tuna special, which he devoured. We ended with a deep fried banana dessert and had a wonderful dining experience. A must stop while you are in Provo. Our total bill with a tip came to $175.00

Coyaba Restaurant what a hidden gem. We were not sure what to think when we pulled up but we were amazed at the wonderful service and management. I had the beer battered strawberry grouper with truffle oil fries and cleaned my plate. M husband had the lobster thermador and was one of the best dishes he has ever eaten. We ended with a tempura banana and caramel cheesecake and a wonderful caramel waffle desert. I wish we had eaten here a few times it was so good and fast service. Our total bill with tip came to $120.00

Hemingway’s on the beach- We came on a Friday night and didn’t have reservations however the nice hostess fit us in after enjoying some drinks at the bar. There was a wonderful jazz saxophone player who was multi-talented and could play many instruments and had a lovely voice. GREAT ENTERTAINMENT! We started off with Conch fritters and I had the grilled mahi mahi and my husband had the grouper Creole they were both great entrees and would highly recommend this restaurant on a Friday night with the entertainment. Our total bill with tip was $120.00

Las Brisas- This restaurant is located in Chalk Sound and was definitely worth the drive. It was a waterfront restaurant with great food. We started off with a shrimp scampi dish, which was divine. I had the grilled grouper with lemon butter and my husband had the filet migon. The food was wonderful and the mashed potatoes were great. Great Chef! Our total bill with a tip was $125.00

Mango Reef- Another hidden gem… We went on a Wednesday evening and had a great time with great service. We normally do not eat off of a “fixed price menu” however we decided to try it and I am so glad that we did. I started off with steamed mussels topped with garlic and a creamy sauce it was GREAT and my husband started off with a warm goat cheese salad, which was also nice. For my entrée I got the grilled lobster with the most tasty melt in your mouth garlic butter a large portion of lobster was served. My husband had the Lobster Curry and it came in a huge bowl with chunks of lobster and he enjoyed it very much. We both finished with hot chocolate soufflés, which was a great ending to a great dinner. I actually wanted to return however my husband wanted to try some other restaurants out but I highly recommend this restaurant. Our total bill with a tip was $135.00

Cabana Bar at the Ocean Club Resort- we had breakfast here a few times and loved it. We both had the cinnamon raisin French toast with the crunchiest bacon I ever ate. It was great and so was the service. Our total bill with a tip was $40.00

Danny Buoys- We had an early dinner here one night and had some great beer and cider and although it was very empty it was great. We started off with the conch chowder, which was great, and I had the Fish and Chips, which were ok, and my husband had the New York strip steak sandwich, which was also just ok? Not a must stop in Provo. Our total bill with a tip came to $90.00

Jimmy’s Dive Bar- after having wonderful seafood for 10 days my husband was craving junk food. We started off with the buffalo wings, which were great, and I had the grouper nuggets not very good and my husband had a burger, which was very large and good. Our total bill with a tip was $60.00

Sharkbites- we were hungry after returning from diving however most restaurants do not open until 6 or 6:30pm so we decided to grab an early dinner here. It’s right on the water in Turtle Cove. Nothing fancy but I had fish and chips, which were great, and my husband had a blackened grouper sandwich. The food was good and our total bill with a tip came to. $55.00

Somewhere Café Lounge- we stopped in here for lunch one afternoon and were not impressed. The service was very slow as well. I had the group sandwich, which I had to send back because the grouper was so tough? I ended up getting a cheeseburger because I didn’t think they could screw that up and it was below average. My husband had the fish tacos and was just okay. Our total bill with tip was $60.00

WEST BAY CLUB RESORT

Located about 10 minutes from the airport. We stayed here for the last 6 days of our trip and we stayed in a studio which was very nicely decorated however a bit small for us we should have booked the suite. There was no view, which we knew going in but after being spoiled with a wonderful view and patio coming from the leeward resort we were definitely missing that. There was a small refrigerator and bar area with glasses, silverware etc. There was also a toaster and a coffee maker. The pool area was very nice with great padded chairs, umbrellas and fluffy towels. I loved that they had music playing all day at the pool. The pool was freezing but very nice. The mango daiquiris are to die for and a must have while here. We never ate at the Atlantic restaurant although it always smelled good from a distance. A continental breakfast is included in the rate and we were offered made to order eggs, sausage, bagels, croissants, muffins and toast. Assorted cereals, juices and fruit. A great spread very plentiful for a continental breakfast with great service. The service at the front desk could be better they look bored out of there minds. The hotel is gated with parking and can be accessed with your room key. The beach is gorgeous with a great attendant and chairs and umbrellas. The West Bay Club is located in a great area with a large beach area and privacy. There was a shower no bath in the studio and it was very large however we didn’t have much hot water during our stay even after they came to fix it. Our safe was also broken but repaired very quickly. There were a lot of families here with lots of kids but they were very behaved. I used the spa here and had a deep tissue massage, eye treatment and scalp massage and it was very relaxing and enjoyable. The gym here is small but very nice. One of the negative things for me was that our keys never worked and we were at the front desk constantly getting then re-programmed. They really need to work out that kink. This hotel was very close to the reef for snorkeling right in front of Coral Gardens. There was also a great snorkeling spot a smith’s reef within walking distance to the hotel that is less crowded. We had a great stay here and if you are looking for a small intimate boutique style hotel then the west bay club is for you.

CONCLUSION

Over all we had a great 2 weeks in paradise. And would definitely return. This island is ideal for families although it was just me and my hubby. We booked 4 dive trips with dive Provo and had a great time. It was a quick flight from Detroit via Atlanta. The worst part of the trip was at the airport for the departure. It is very small. dirty and unorganized and the service SUCKS! After checking in with Delta we went and ate in the airport restaurant and after ordering drinks I hear my name being paged to security over the intercom? I walked out and was escorted down a small dark hall to a small back room with inspectors and was interrogated. Three of my bags were picked to search, which was weird? The ladies checking the bags were RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!! After the search was over I went back to eat my lunch. After waiting in a long line to pass thru security we waited in the small waiting area for our departure. Upon boarding the plane you have to go thru yet another pat down and carry on bag search, which each and every bag is searched? I am all for safety but is this really needed. It really left a bad taste in my mouth of Turks and Caicos. I have traveled around the world and everywhere in the Caribbean and really was in shock over this horrible departure. But we will return!

1. Re: Long trip report.. Leeward Resort and West Bay Club

Thanks for the detailed report.

We also enjoy splitting resorts while on vacation, but try to save the nicest accommodations for last. It's kind of a bummer to move out of a one-bedroom ocean view suite, and into a studio with no view, no matter how nice the resort -- been there, done that.

Yep, I've also had my lucky number drawn at the PLS airport. Never found them particularly rude, but I doubt many of the airport employees have ever won a congeniality contest. :-) Oh well, as long as they keep us safe.

Thanks again. Sounds like a return trip might be in order?

Very nice and interesting report, thanks....

I'll just mention that, regarding your departure problems, this is not just Turks & Caicos. Since the "Underwear Bomber" every international flight into the US undergoes some version of this pat-down search. I've made three international flights lately, from the Caribbean and Europe, and have had the pat-down / search all carry-on's routine each time. I doubt that it really does any good, but sure does delay things. (Now, the rude security person is another, separate matter.....)

really i travel for a living as I work for a large hotel chain.. and i havent experienced this kind of search at any other airport? I guess I got lucky.. I didnt mind getting searched as I have nothing to hide but its the manner they do it in that rubs me the wrong way... Thanks

Only since the first of the year and only on international flights entering the US. I happened to have 3 such flights in January and all 3 had the full pat-down and carry-on search. Haven't had such a flight in the past month and things might have changed (again) and I'm sure not all airports implement it the same, but I can assure you, it's not just a PLS thing.

Wonderful report. All the restaurant reviews had my mouth watering.

I am still on the fence as to whether we should spit our stay between 2 resorts next trip. Did you feel it was a hassle to repack everything and move to a different hotel?

Great trip report.

I personally would like to do a split someday.

Half at either Pine Cay and the Meridian Club or Blue Horizon Resort on Middle Caicos at Mudjin Harbour.

AND.....of course on Grace Bay and at my favorite The Somerset.

Would do the "out" portion first and then the comfy Grace Bay location last.

It is nice to have multiple experiences on vacation.

We do a form of a split on most of our trips. Often it is a villa to a resort. North Caicos to Provo. One time we moved three times. North Caicos, Parrot Cay & then Provo.

I think it's fun, especially when it's a total change of pace. We always end our trips in Provo to make getting to the airport the next day nice and relaxed.

With all the free night promos going on you could switch to experience a snazzy place after staying at a moderte resort.

Wait until they deploy the full-body scanners to all of the airports! They started using them at Logan this week and the reports are it was adding an average of 45 more minutes of waiting in line to get through security.

I received full pat-downs at Logan and Providenciales last week. Only had the carry-ons searched departing PLS.

It's a crappy part of traveling, and some of the TSA employees aren't very friendly/helpful, but it's all a part of the world we live in. I believe there are other things they could/should be doing, but these measures are designed to help keep dummies off the planes with shoe and underwear explosive devices.
