Question for Turks/Bahamas well traveled people

We have been to Turks twice now and love it and I was wondering if any of you have been to the Exumas, and for that matter even the Atlantis or One and Only beach club in the Bahamas. We are torn about where to go this year on vacation and the Exumas look amazing because we love the green turquoise water and soft white sand beaches. We are thinking about returning to Turks but want to try out the Bahamas maybe this year and with diving included,we may go with Sandals Emerald Bay or Grand Isle resort in the Exumas. It does seem to be a lot of travel time to fly down there though! I just wanted input here from Turks people because you all know how nice the beaches and water are in Provo. Thanks in advance!

Been to the Bahamas many times in the 70's--80's. Last time was 2000 and we visited Atlantis only for seeing the "DIG' ,Casino and dinner. Been to Turks & Caicos in the 80's--90's--Zens and Teens. Air travel time is a serious consideration for me going to destinations. Also been to Haiti many times as part of Medical Missions team focusing on children past 30 years. Past several years we have really accelerated our visits to Turks & Caicos because this is our utopia of the Island vibe and happiness it brings us every time we are here. Granted, we are not divers but this is the place we love. So it's your decision what brings that aura of being satisfied going to your destination. Someone on the forum suggested the red sands beach in the Bahamas to go visit. I am considering that and also the Maldives(24-30 hrs travel time). Till then, it's T & C for me. DR. JIM

I love the Exuma Islands! Grande Isle resort is gorgeous . I would stay there in a heart beat but remember its a short drive from Georgetown . All the beaches reminded me of mini grace bays and most likely you will have them all to yourselves. We flew American through Miami and then straight into Georgetown (GGT). If you go you have to go out on the swimming pig/thunderball tour. It's amazing! I have pictures if interested. I say go for it! Exuma doesnt have the fine dining as Provo though.

I too love Exumas! Grand Isle is gorgeous.

The beaches in Exumas might even be slightly prettier than Grace Bay, and all to yourself.

A couple of things to consider though:

The nicest beaches require a long drive or by boat.

Going by boat to different Cays are amazing and gorgeous. It's easy but kinda expensive to rent a boat to hop around.

From Sandals/ grand isle, it's about 45 minutes to Georgetown. From Georgetown you can go on Sundays by water taxi to Chat N Chill for a pig roast, do not miss!

Restaurants are very casual, just okay. The one at Club Peace and Plenty is best. Not ranked as Provo restaurants are.

You need a water taxi to Stocking Island for the day, another do not miss. You can get it at Club Peace and Plenty.

One of the best beaches is Tropic of Cancer (really on the line!) about a 1 hour drive from Georgetown. Another do not miss beach is Coco Plum, about 15 minutes from Sandals by car. (good restaurant there too)

If you want to see Staniel Cay, or the pigs swim, requires a completely different trip, you can't do all Exumas from 1 trip (unless you charter a plane, or pay about $1000 for a boat trip)

Captain Lewless, who can be found thru Club Peace and Plenty, can take you on a day trip to more southern Cays, even to Long Bay to their beaches. Highly recommended.

jayJay is the best bonefish guide in Caribbean (always on espn 2)

Overall, it has a true Bahama vibe, is extremely sleepy, and requires effort to see the best beaches.

You can always split your trip with One and Only (much nicer but much more expensive) or Atlantis. Atlantis is crazy! Full of people, cruise ships, crazy water park. Tons of fun, casino is gorgeous. Beaches are just okay.

Thanks so much for all your input.I really want the Exumas but can't we go to Staniel Cay if staying at Sandals or Grande Isle? I thought we could do the 007 Grotto tour and see the pigs the same time? Also my only holdback on the Exumas is the damn travel time in the air.The soonest I found is leaving KC Mo around 6am and getting to Georgetown aroung 2pm,then the return is an all day return with all the layovers etc.Are the Exumas worth the extra time and money or should I maybe try to go to One and Only by Atlantis or just stick to what I know which is Turks where I can be down there in 4-5 hours and I know what I'm getting! I've priced out Sandals in the summer and it's around $6000 and Grande Isle is around $5200 so not sure if either is worth it,please let me know and thanks again....

We will be doing a TCI/Bahamas vacation this coming June. Although this will be our first trip to TCI, we have been to Nassau, Staniel Cay and Long Island Southern Bahamas a few times. Bahamas Air will get you from Providencials to Nassau and from there you will need to make a connection on one of the local carriers to head back down south. Because of a rather tight connection time between the Bahamas Air flight and Southern Air we opted to stay a couple nights at Atlantis (will be our first time there).

As the other posts stated, the Exuma Cays are amazing. We have stayed at Staniel Cay Yacht Club where the all inclusive rate includes use of a 14' Boston Whaler. This is a unique experience if you prefer an active vacation where you can head out and explore the nearby cays. Keep in mind that the yacht club's accomodations are basic and this is not a destination for the traveler who prefers to be pampered.

I would also suggest Cape Santa Maria Resort on Long Island if you are looking for a Bahamas destination with a world class beach.

I'm attaching a link that has a photo collection from our recent trip. The first 15 photos are from Long Island, the remaining are from Staniel Cay Yacht Club and the surrounding cays.

One tour takes you to the swimming pigs, staniel cay, thunderball grotto, you go to a huge sandbar, and can swim with nurse sharks, etc. recommend Roberts adventures or 4 C's athough there are plenty tour groups to choose from. It's an amazing day! I think it cost around $80 - $ 100 per person depending who you go out with.
