Enjoy GT! You can take a cab from the port to Pillory Beach/ Bohio Resort for around $9-10.00 per person. Not great off beach snorkelling on GT though, I would consider a snorkel excursion to have a great experience,

You really need a boat, it's not a great distance but for better snorkeling it's just far enough you need the boat.

if you decide to take an excursion/ boat ...which I know wasn't your question.....then I'd recommend any of the great diving companies on the island. Oasis, Blue Water Divers..etc to take you to the wall for snorkleling. A great excursion is to Gibb's Cay! You can interact with the stingrays within their own environment and snorkel!

Still... Off beach snorkleling......Pillory Beach/ Bohio Resort.

A follow up question. If one wanted to go to Gibb's Cay, would it be better to walk of the cruise ship and book with one of the companies like Oasis, or book through the cruise line? We are a family of 5, so somewhat price sensitive.

Oasis is the tour operator for Carnival and the other cruise lines and you would have to book any Oasis tour with the ship. The cruise tour to Gibb's is with 60 to 80 people PER boat. It gets pretty crowded..

You might try contacting Grand Turk Diving. Blue Water Diving or Papa J's for your day of snorkeling. All offer tours between the West side (the Wall) and Gibb's Cay or combinations of both.

The better snorkeling is way off the beach and not recommend from shore. It's a lot better by boat. Pillory Beach is OK and Governor's Beach is OK for snorkeling if you swim out some but there is a LOT of boat traffic on cruise ship days so it's not a great idea unless you have a float/flag. Even then I would keep an eye out but there would be less traffic at Pillory Beach.

One of the best snorkel places from beach access is off the end of the airport runway, the whole area is called English Point. You can get to the water from an iron shore beach and swim out to the dark spots which are reefs on white sand or "Bommies". There are some very nice large coral heads here, usually lots of stingrays and occasionally eagle and manta rays. You would need a taxi or golf cart to get there. Or bikes. It's about 1.75 miles from the port. Go to the end of the runway and there are two trails(on either side of the big concrete "grand turk" sign) that you can use to cut through the bush (lots of prickly plants) to reach the water.
