Customs

What is it like going through customs in Provo? Do they take apart your checked bag? are there search dogs through customs? Does it move rather quickly? And to lock the checked bag or not?

Usually they would not open your bags unless something looks suspicious, like 200lbs of bags for a 3 day stay. The search dogs usually sniff thru things while still on the conveyer belt. Never lock a bag and never pack anything you don't want to part with. It moves as quick as it can depending on how many flights are on the ground at one time.

Coming in I have never had them take apart a checked bag, but leaving I have had them do it a few times. They are more likely to search your checked bag in the US on it's way to Provo. That happens quite a bit and they put a piece of paper in their letting you know they searched it.

Don't lock your checked bag! It is against the rules since Sept 11 and they will cut it off.

Ours have been searched a few times leaving Provo. They dont always pull you and your bag while you are checking in. Last time we had checked our bags, gone through security and we were already sitting in the waiting room and they called us to come out. My bag has been searched a few times leaving the US, you know it has been searched because of the note and the mess they make.

What if You have a Key for your lock? Or will they just break that?

You can lock your bags as long as it is a TSA approved lock. It will say it on the package. They can still search your bag with it without cutting it off. You can purchase these at places like Walmart and Target. My husband flys almost every week with one of these and has never had any issues with it.

All bags in US side are checked. The will cut the lock, so don't even bother locking. (or use TSA approved, meaning they can open it anyway)

Okay, what are you trying to bring? If it's valuable leave it at home, why chance stealing?

If it's illegal, don't even think about it.

Yeah, you sound really nervous. It is against the law to lock since 9/11! No exceptions. They will remove your lock and search your bag. A locked bag is a dead give away. No one uses them anymore. Dogs will sniff arriving in T & C and when you return to the US. No way to avoid it.

TSA locks are okay, we've used them since 9/11. If you are used to locking your luggage and comfortable doing so, just make sure they are TSA locks.
