snorkeling

We would like to spend a month this winter and wonder if snorkeling from shore is possible and good or do you need to hire a boat? Where are the good snorkeling sites and how easy are they to get to? We are retired but quite agile. Also, any ideas of where to rent a "condo" for this length of stay. Thanks

Welcome to TripAdvisor and the St. Croix forum, 1donp. You have plenty of time to plan your perfect trip! There is a Top Question on the right all about snorkeling and where to find it - I think pretty much all the places mentioned are shore snorkels, which are great on St. Croix. The only part of the island where there isn't a reef is the south side, so you can visit beaches north, east, and west every day for some snorkel fun without needing a boat. However, lots of people enjoy a boat trip to nearby Buck Island as a day visit.

To determine where you want to stay, you might want to know more about the island, here are a few website that can get you started:

I love a more lush and jungly vacation, so I choose the north. A good condo complex there is Gentle Winds. Mid-island, near the main city of Christensted (shops and restaurants all concentrated in a cool old Danish city), is Pelican Cove condos(I've stayed here and loved it). The reef there comes right to shore so you'll need to walk 5 minutes to the Pelican Cove hotel where there's an opening in the reef where you snorkel. There are also several condo complexes on Sugar Beach, a bit closer to Christensted.

As I'm less familiar with the condo complexes on the east, I will leave that to the folks who know it better.

St. Croix is a relaxing place to be; I envy you staying a month!
