At Home In The Tropics or Marriott Frenchman's Reef/MS Star?

I've read the Trip Advisor Reviews for At Home In the Tropics & Marriott FM's Reff & Morningstar and all the other resorts on St Thomas. We've been to the St Thomas off cruise ships at least a dozen times. We plan on renting a car to explore the island on our own. Looking for pros, cons & opinions of why you would or wouldn't stay at either of these locals. We plan on visitng the last week of June.

At Home in the Tropics is not a resort - B&B or guesthouse really - you will have to leave to visit any beaches or out for lunch and dinners so a rental car will certainly be necessary - it is much more relaxed and personal than the Marriot - The Hotel there will be undergoing a massive re-do and some things, restaurants, pools, rooms will be closed in June - but staying at Mstar will be fine - directly on the beach and has some food options - no nightlife to speak of and with a fair amount of Fr. Reef closed there may be none at all?

2 very different experiences - depending on your needs it may come down to beach access and hotel food OR a smaller more personal accommodation above town with a pleasant morning on premise and your days spent out exploring.

IMO the East End resorts/condos provide a lot of good choices. Ritz, Secret Harbour, Elysian, Sapphire Beach all have nice accomodations and all are on nice beaches and close to Red Hook which has a lot of restaurants and good nightlife.

Thanks for the respones. Not really worried about staying on the beach. We were interested in being close to Charlotte Amalie as we have favorite restaurants and a few friends in the area. My main concern with Morningstar was ending up in the middle of a construction zone. :-( At Home In The Tropics seems to be centrally located with easy access to visit other locals on St Thomas and ferry to Virgin Gorda, Tortola possibly? We don't mind being in a more laid-back less resort type environment.

At Home in the Tropics is one of my favorite places! That being said, the other posters are right. This is not a resort. The Marriott is great as a resort, but construction can be a nuisance.

The owners/hosts at At Home in the Tropics are wonderful people. The breakfasts are terrific and filling enough to last until dinner. The view of the harbor is superb daytime and night time. Extremely clean. It's like a Maine cottage plopped down in the Caribbean. Small pool for cooling off. Great gallery (covered porch) for watching the boats and seaplanes come and go.

Convenient for walking into town to shop or down to the ferry for St. John and BVI, provided you do not have a problem walking up and down many steps.

We are returning to At Home...this summer with extended family. I did a post on my blog about At Home in the Tropics last Xmas with a few pics... http://tinyurl.com/4x5yb6v
