snorkelling on St Thomas or St John?

We are taking a cruise, and our focus is snorkelling. Any opinions as to our best bet for a day: we'll have about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Should we go to St. John or stay on St. Thomas, which is where we dock? Our cruise line has an excursion to St. John but the focus does not seem to be on snorkelling, just on beaching it. Any favored organized snorkelling tirps? (not private -- not enough money!) Thanks for any tips.

There's good snorkelling at Coki and Sapphire Beaches on St Thomas. St John has better snorkelling, but with your few hours in port, you wouldn't have enough time, IMO, to really enjoy St John.

There's an extensive review of Sapphire Beach in the St Thomas forum on http://www.cruisecritic.com.

With the limited time recommend snorkeling on STT. Secret Harbor and the Elysian are both nice beaches with snorkeling. Hopefully they both will have again a bar/grill option open again soon.

One day last winter we went to Sapphire, which I have always loved, but it was so very windy that day we moved to Secret Harbor for a very nice day with no wind.

You can do both with a private boat tour. You can snorkel with turtles off Buck Island, plus see all the beaches of St. John and snorkel Waterlemon Cay and Trunk Bay...

The cruise excursion to St. John probably goes to Trunk Bay, which has the underwater snorkeling trail. If this is your first time, the cruise excursion may be your best bet. You can also take the ferry over to St. John yourself and hire a taxi to take you along the north shore (some of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean) and drop you at Trunk or Hawksnest or Caneel and return at a designated time. (There are always taxis at Trunk and Caneel; Hawksnest you're on your own and would be dependent on your driver.) St. John has beautiful beaches and great snorkeling.
