Safari Bus from Havensight to Tillett Gardens

We will be in Charlotte Amalie for one day with cruise stop (docking in Havensight). We wanted to go Tillett Gardens, mostly to go to Water Candy. I know a lot of people recommend taxis over public transportation, but in this case we wanted to try the Safari bus that runs out by Tutu Park Mall (correct?) Is there a stop fairly close to Havensight that we can catch the Safari Bus public transportation? I have used bus services on other islands and find it an inexpensive way to see more of the island. My thanks for any information that is offered on this subject.

Since the US Virgin Islands have modeled their economy on the US, and not Europe, public transportation isn't as good in the VI as it is on many other islands. The most reliable public transportation is provided by private taxi drivers who choose to service the locals instead of the tourists, and traverse the $1/$2 designated safari route that starts in the west at the University of the Virgin Islands, and goes east to Red Hook, before heading back to UVI.

The closest public safari stop near Havensight is in front of the new outdoor shopping plaza, Virgin Marley's. That's not a legal stop, though, so there's no guarantee the driver will stop there. The closest legal stop going east is the stop past KMart in front of the hospital.

If you take the 'dollar ride' safari it will be $2 to Tillet 's - town to Kmart =$1 Kmart - Red Hook = $1

Tillet Gardens is past Kmart.

On the way back - since the country safari only goes in one circular direction you will have to go all the way to Red Hook before heading back towards Havensight - that is likely to be $3 - Tillet to Red Hook =$1 Red Hook to Kmart = $1 Kmart to Town = $1

You will certainly find it to be " an inexpensive way to see more of the island" as you mentioned and spend a few hours doing it.

They can walk the short distance back to the mall to take a safari going back to town if they don't want to go all the way to Red Hook and back.

My recommendation is to take a taxi at least to get to Tillett and forget about using the safari buses. You only have a few hours in port and it doesn't make a lot of sense to waste much of that standing on the side of a hot and dusty road trying to figure out whether the passing transport is a $1 safari or a regular safari taxi. Once you get to Tillett you could ask someone there about catching the safari from there to Red Hook (VERY easy) and from there down to the hospital (a little trickier but doable, necessitates finding the right bus!). From the hospital it's about a 10 minute walk to the Havensight cruise ship dock.

We saw people sweating at the top of the Sapphire Resort waiting for the $2 "bus" when we drove into RH for groceries and when we returned over an hour later and they were still there. I was more concerned about the kids than the stupid parents and was ready to go pick them up and give them a ride when they finally flagged a taxi leaving Sapphire.

What a way to spend your day on a beautiful island just to save a few $$...

Thank you for the information. I took the suggested advice and we took an safari type taxi from Havensight to Tillett Gardens ($7 pp). It made stops at Red Hook and Coki Beach first and this was fine by me as it allowed us to see a little more of the island. This was not our first trip to St. Thomas and we had visited Coral World on a previous trip; however, had never been to Red Hook and found that to be really scenic and interesting. After our stop in Tillett Gardens we walked to Tutu Park Mall and caught the dollar bus returning to town. It is not very far to walk to get to the mall. We greeted our fellow passengers on the bus and found them to be very helpful when we had a question about where the bus would stop closest to Havensight. We had a nice afternoon and did not break the bank doing it Thank you once again for your advice.
