St Martin/Maarten vs St Thomas

My husband and I have been to St Martin several times and really love it. We like to rent a car and drive around the island checking out the different beaches. We're not into clubs or casinos, but we do like to have cocktails in the evenings at the various bars. One of our favorite things about St Martin is the people, we love meeting locals and hearing their stoires and how they made there way to the island...it seems there are very few people that are actually from St Martin.

My husband and I are now thinking of trying somewhere new and St Thomas sounds appealing. I'm wondering if anyone has been to St Martin and can compare it to other crribbean destinations.

I have been to St Martin and loved it (the French side). I have now booked my 3rd trip to St Thomas. I like St Thomas better because there are more affordable places (villas) to rent than in St Martin. St Martin in general is more expensive. The views from St Thomas are hard to beat as well. Jost Van Dyke, Tortola and of course St John. Also St John is an easy fairy ride over and St John is only like 1/3 populated due to protected parks so it almost looks like a deserted island in parts with unbelievably beautiful beaches.

We wound up booking a trip to St. Thomas in early December for 10 days at the Sugar Bay Resort on the East End. St. Martin was slightly more pricey and we may go back there next year. We are definitely going to do a 1/2 day in St. John and a full day taking a trip to Virgin Gorda in the BVI because I've been there before and it may be the most beautiful place I have ever been. :-)

There is a lot to see on St. Thomas and the surrounding islands like Water Island and St. John. My heart will probably always love St. Martin/Maarten best, but I'm looking forward to spending our vacation in the USVI.

Not a great difference between the two except that St.Thomas, naturally, has more of a North American feel to it as oppose to St.Martin that is more European. I have been to both, St.Thomas this past summer. I prefer St.Martin due to the european influence, the more liberal attire or lack of attire on the beach and the food experiences are better. I also must say St.Martin has more of the quaint little bars to hang out at. Having said all that St.Thomas was lovely and I am not sure that any beaches can beat Cinnamon Bay on St.John.

We've stayed on SXM and STT and they are not that similar to us. And Saint Martin is nothing like St Thomas of course. I would recommend looking at other islands for the interests you mentioned.

We love Tortola, and although it is quieter like Saint Martin there are some excellent beach bars and bands on Tortola, as well as some very good dining options. And the people of Tortola are wonderful. We often stay on Tortola and then on STT before flying home and believe it or not there are actually more beach bars and Caribbean/reggae bands on Tortola to enjoy. And you have Josts right there to enjoy as well.

Other options worth considering are Antigua, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. We just returned Saturday from a stay on Grand Cayman and the people are very friendly and have interesting stories. We particularly enjoyed trying different beach bars each evening.

And when we spent a week in Jamaica with 3 other couples we were based in Mo Bay and took day trips to Negril/the Caves and to Ocho Rios and met many amazing people and saw many gorgeous beaches.

St Thomas is a nice enough island to visit and we do stay there occasionally after our trips to the Caribbean. But it is more of an "Americanized vibe" like St John, and we just don't feel like we're in the Caribbean there. But others will have different opinions and they are valid too. Just research different places to find one that interests you...

I think the big advantage to St. Thomas over so many other islands is its proximity to St. John and the BVI. Island hopping is easy and every one is a little different.

If you're interested in casinos & lots of choices for nightlife/bars & unique little cafes, St. Martin/Maarten is the best way to go. If you want a laid-back vacation with some of the prettiest stretches of sand in the Caribbean, it's hard to beat the USVI/BVI combo. St. Thomas and St. John also have a number of excellent restaurants.

I see that you have visited many of the areas we have, and we are now considering Jamaica. But, we have heard that it would not be a good idea to rent a car and explore on our own there. As this is what we really like to do when on vacation, I see that you did trips to the caves and such, did you rent a car, and if so, how was that experience?

LongIsland: this is an old thread and doesn't have anything to do with your question. Also, you should post questions about Jamaica on its own forum (USVI and Jamaica aren't related at all). You seem to have a question for one particular poster so you could send them a private message. Click on their name and you'll see a link you can use. Happy vacation destination researching!
