Toddlers

This will be our first time in St. Thomas in January. We are taking our very active two-year old. For him, we are looking for accommodations with a separate sleeping area (separate bedroom) and very close proximity to a nice beach. Any Advice?

I keep recommending Secret Harbour because it seems to fit with a lot of people's needs and is reasonably priced. The rooms are large. You can get a one bedroom condo, if you choose. All rooms have kitchens or kitchenettes (this is a great advantage when traveling with children). You can either rent an ocean view room (up on the hillside above the beach -- a 5 minute walk down hill) or a beach front room (10 steps from the sand). The beach front rooms are also easy walking to the admininstration building, restaurant, dive shop, etc. And the beach is very pretty with lots of shade, calm, clear water, and great snorkeling. Housekeeping staff is excellent.

The resort is located 5 minutes from the ferry at Red Hook, which can zip you over to St. John in 15 minutes. The ferries leave every hour all day and, if you're in the islands for more than a couple of days, you should make sure to spend one day on St. John. When you taxi from the airport you can have the driver stop in Red Hook for supplies -- breakfast food, snacks, drinks, stuff for your child, etc. -- very convenient.

There are numerous other places to stay. The Ritz is very nice, of course, and has two beautiful beaches. But it is very expensive, especially during high season. Point Pleasant also has the sort of set up room wise that you might want, but the beach is not nearly as nice as Secret Harbour. Sapphire is very nice, but there are management probs at the moment and may be best to avoid. Frenchman's Reef is nice, especially if you have one of the beachfront rooms at Morning Star, but still the beach at Secret Harbour is nicer I think, and it's certainly more low key and private. The Wyndham has a lovely pool and pretty gardens and great views from their perch, but the beach is small and just so so.

If you're planning to go to STT in January, you'd better get reservations now!

echo exactly!

Secret Harbour is excellent esp with kids. I'd get a beachfront, your baby monitor will reach and you can relax on the beach while he's napping. They are huge we had a 2 bedroom with 3 kids and it was HEAVEN!

calm water for him to play in, nice pool (up the hill) Plus the beach there has nice snorkling too. buy him mask and snorkle he can see fish in 3ft of water.

kzdallas, thank you for your advice. It confirms what I was already thinking about Secret Harbour. According to an online travel service, it's not too late to book. We're looking forward to it!
