Carib Beach Resort is right next to the airport. No taxi needed.

In the grand sceme of things, they are reasonable. Due to current economic factors though, they are out of my league. Camp sites??

If you have your own tent, Magens Bay offers camping facilities for max 2 nights. Here's a link to their website:

www.magensbayauthority.com

The fee is $50 and this must be paid one week in advance. Other than that, there are no campsites on St Thomas. Just a note of caution - you aren't allowed to sleep on the beach on St Thomas, nor on St John unless you stay at one of the campgrounds.

The Island Beachcomber is a good place that is pretty cheap. Check it out:

www.islandbeachcomber.net

It is on a nice beach, 1/4 mile at most from the airport, and has a great restarant/bar!

Looks like a fun place: but, was more expensive than all the other options :(

$70 is my sweet spot

If you opted for camping at Magens Bay which is your least expensive bet on STT you also have to figure in the taxi fare. Here's a link to the taxi rates:

vinow.com/stthomas/…taxi_stt

For instance, to get from the airport to Magens will cost you $12 plus $2 per bag and then you'll have to taxi from there the next morning either to Red Hook or to Charlotte Amalie for a ferry to STJ and this all adds up.

If you stayed at Island Beachcomber or one of the other hotels on the airport road you're only a very short distance from the CA ferry terminal. Why don't you go directly from STT to one of the campgrounds on STJ?

Bottom line is your $70/night really isn't doable and arbitrarily camping out on any beach here outside of a regulated camping area potentially puts you in harm's way, not to mention the possibility of being entertained by the VIPD overnight in a cellblock, which isn't a good experience!

On STJ we are at Cinnamon bay so covered there. So the VIPD offers cheap accommodations??? :)

This will all be moot if I can get on the earlier flight standby out of Chicago / Atlanta.

Youth hostel, homestay??

I have been trying to email Best Western and Island Beachcomber to see if they have a crew rate, no replies to emails yet and can't call while on the clock. . .

I would call versus e mail. They are not ones to check their e mail hourly and respond back quickly!
