Traveling w/ a pregnant woman - is Dengue fever a concern?

Arriving in St. John on Saturday and while doing research about damage on this site and a few others, I came across info about an outbreak on the island. Is this still a concern? Since the resort is damaged, we will be traveling all over the island. Any info you have would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you research this site (the TA search engine is so sadly neglected by general posters!) you will note that dengue has been addressed several times over several recent months with Julie (who, I should add is currently pregnant and is the Resident St John Dengue Maven - what a handle, eh Julie?)

Dengue (or rather the mosquitoes which may transmit it) has always been here but is very rarely a problem. Protect yourself with mosquito repellant but don't get your knickers all in a twist.

Yup, I'm preggers for sure. (That's quite a handle you came up with STT! ) And I have been on St. John the whole time and have taken these precautions....well, pretty much none. I bring a long sleeve shirt, long loose pj bottoms, to the beach and if the mosquitoes are out I A. Go in the water or B. Cover up as much of my body as I can. But I do that even when I'm not pregnant. The thing about Dengue is you should be AWARE of the symptoms because they are very similar to the flu. If your wife starts to feel like she has the flu, it would be good for her to get tested for Dengue just to be on the safe side. I know Dengue sounds super scary, and in some rare cases, it IS super scary. BUT, if you are aware of it, make sure you get yourself checked out if you suspect it, you will be much better off. One of the reasons why I started the thread on Dengue is to bring awareness to those of you who travel here. If you happened to get home and felt like you had the flu, you will likely have to tell your doctor about it, because it might not be something they would even consider.

Congrats on the pregnancy!!! Hope you have a great time while you are here. There is just nothing like floating in the big ol' ocean when you are pregnant. It's like heaven :-)
