Charter or do on your own?

Whats the best way to see some of the BVI, by charter with a captain or try to rent a boat and do on our own.?We want to do some snorkeling and exploring not interested in drinking or hanging out at a bar. Just a 1 day rental.

We are renting a villa on St. John.

Thanks

With a captain! They know all the good spots, know what spots are better given the conditions, and will get you there quickly while providing commentary on what you are passing, etc.

We own a boat and are very capable but never go out without a captain

Take a look at the currently running thread on a charter for a larger group and you'll find some good information. You're just one person too many for the more common "six pack" charters!

100% with a captain - having a captain costs only about $100 more and is well worth the money.

There are only a few companies available on St John that can legally carry more than 7 and unfortunately the cost is quite a bit higher than the six pack boats. You can expect to pay $150 per person and higher depending on the company plus fuel plus Customs (if going to the BVI)

Hope this helps

Another vote to go with a captain. If you aren't familiar with where to go and how to get there quickly, you could waste much of your day. There is so much to do and see that I'd want as much time snorkeling and seeing places without worrying about where I was going.

Look for trips that have stops around St. John (Waterlemon, for example) and the Caves (Norman Island), etc. Skip those that go to Jost van Dyke and the beach bars. We've done different trips over the years on different boats. I'll have to go back and see if I can figure which we did the most snorkeling on.

ENJOY!
