I'll start by saying that I love trip advisor and am very active on here. I post often both to help and ask questions.
I'll also say that I love St John and have been visiting there and pumping money onto the island for years and just about a yearly basis the last 5 or 6 years.
I smoke cigars when on vacation. I'm mindful about it. I don't light up in a crowd, make sure to pick the far end of the beach on the correct side of the wind direction, don't leave matches or butts when done, etc.
Apparently there is a new law that says you can't smoke on STJ beaches any longer (although when there last week I saw no signs at any beach we visited- Trunk, Cinnamon, or Hawksnest or anywhere else.
I did however encounter a few VERY VERY rude people, all citing tripadvisor posts making them feel that they should come and tell me not to smoke all while inferring I should have seen or known this new law somewhere. One person said 50 yards from the water, another said 50 feet.
Its a shame that you can find more places to smoke in a prison (just a guess) than you can on an expensive island vacation.
This rule will cause me to discontinue coming to St John. Such a shame.
