What are the differences in the north shore and south shore beaches? Which are the best for swimming and snorkeling?

The only difference in my mind is how easy it is to get to the North Shore beaches. They are just off the road and most are a very short walk from the parking lot. South Shore beaches are a little tougher to get to. Either a rough road or a hike or both, meaning fewer people. Swimming & snorkeling depend on weather conditions. If North Shore is too rough or it's raining on that side of the island, then head over to Coral Bay side. Same applies if it's raining on Coral Bay side. Head to North Shore beaches. Good snorkeling can be found everywhere. Just be aware of any currents. If it looks rough (even small whitecaps), don't chance it. Just go to another beach. Have fun!

Most of the North Shore beaches are sandy beaches. Many of the South Shore beaches are rock or coral rubble, and entry is more difficult because of urchins and such. On the South side, Little Lameshur is sandy (walk up to the ruins on the right - beautiful views up there. Salt Pond is sandy but it's a bit of a hike down a narrow road to reach it. Save WATER to drink on the way up, and if you go here, take the side hike over to Drunk Bay which is not a swimming beach, but amazing to see. Also, Vie's beach on the East end is a nice sandy beach, right across the street from a snack shack selling GOOD conch fritters, rice and beans with meatsauce, fried chicken, and home made tarts. It costs $2.50 to go to Vie's beach, per person. There are some loungers there so you probably don't need yours. She's closed on Sunday and Monday. Happy travels!
