My friend and I would really like to go to Exuma to experience the pig swim. I hear if a man who runs the pig swim trips and also has a cabin to rent to us. It is 1.5 - 3 miles from Georgetown area. It is inexpensive. However, I am not sure being isolated with no car in a cabin, 2 American women alone is the way to go. I am sure there are no ammenities, no pool, and not smack in the center of town.

I am not even sure how far from the ocean it is.

Hotels on Exuma are very expensive.

Does anybody have a recommendation what is the best way to go?

Cabin, hotel in Exuma, or hotel i Nassau and fly over for the pig swim. I am trying to keep the cost down but at the same time, be and not isolated.

Also is it advised to rent a car? Are taxis abundant?

Tough to say, all depends on your comfort level. How are the reviews of the place of where you are staying?

If your main reason to go to the Exumas is to participate in a "pig swim," the it's probably not worth the trouble or cost of going. I know the YouTube videos make the piglets look cute, but you're not really going swimming with the pigs. Basically, most excursions take you and a couple dozen of your closest friends close to shore where the pigs live, let you toss food in the water, and let you watch the pigs swim up to get food. Some people get in the water, and some people go on the beach. But know that the pigs that swim up to your boat are huge porkers, several hundred pounds in weight, with sharp hooves. They are feral animals, and unpredictable. And like other wild animals, they take care of their "business" wherever is convenient for them. You stay there for a few minutes, and then move on. It's not like some organized dolphin swim.

If you are interested in the Exumas in general -- and they are amazing for some travelers -- then go for it. But spending a lot of money for a pig swim if you are not otherwise interested in the Exumas is IMHO a waste of money.

Thank you - yes, the pig swim was the main objective. So glad I asked. For the money I would rather go to Dominican Republic - heard all good things about that. Or take a boat to Bimini next time I am Miami - much closer.

Yes clips on the Bachelor made it look like the do-or-die bucket list item for us.

So Thank you for that information.

The 2nd poster is right on! Stay away from the pigs! Spend your money elsewhere. It's an over rated tourist trap.

They eat meat to as well, that is why I would want to avoid them. Not like they are gorillas.:)
