Which island of the Bahamas (activity, dining, nightlife)?

We have never been to the Bahamas before and are considering a May trip. During the day we like to be active (biking, hiking, snorkeling, boating, kayaking, etc) but at night we love to cocktail and enjoy fine or fun dining (mexican, tapas, seafood, not steak). Which Bahamas Islands are the best and which resorts do you like as well? We are not the Atlantis type but enjoy a lower-key, fun atmosphere. Bar & restaurant suggestions also welcome before we book our trip.

It's a rather broad question, but I will try to give you some initial insite, which will help you to do some additional research, and refine some of your choices.

Most major airlines will fly into either Nassau or Freeport (the two major ports) from mainland USA. Getting to some of the out islands will require a transfer to a smaller, local carrier, and will take more time and money, althought I believe that Bahamasair and some of the US carriers do fly into the airport at North Eleuthera. The out islands are a bit more laid back, and generally more expensive. (My personal favourite is Harbor Island.)

Of the two major centres, Nassau (and adjoining Paradise Island) is a bit more "active" than Freeport. There are a wide variety of places to stay, each with its own style, atmosphere and pricing. Some of the more popular mid-range priced places around Nassau you might want to check out are: Sheraton, Breezes, Wyndham, Sandals (all at Cable Beach, just west of Nassau town), Riu (Paradise Island), and Compass Point (near the airport). Some are All Incl. some are not. There are others as well.

Hope this will be a good start for you.
