1 day each at Freeport and Nassau

Hi,

We are cruising to Bahamas. The ship is going to let us out 9-5 in Freeport and the next whole day at Nassau. Desperatelt need tips.

1. What all to see at Nassau and Freeport? I did some studies for Nassau. Came up with a list. Not sure if it is doable in 1 day.

Queen's Staircase

Christ Church Cathedral

Pirates Museum

Vendue House

Ardastra gardens and zoo

Fort Charlotte

Straw market

Bacardi distillery

Please advise.

2. Haven't yet checked out details for Freeport. Suggestions for day trip?

3. We wish to participate in the people-to-people program. Given the time we have in each island and the attractions, where should we prefer to have it? Please keep in mind that we are going to Freeport on day 1 and Nassau on day 2.

Thanks,

Vivek

That's probably more than a day's worth of activities for Nassau. The Queen's Staircase, Straw Market, Pirates of Nassau Museum, and the church are pretty much close together. Within blocks at most. In fact the church, pirates museum, and straw market are within two blocks of each other. Ardastra Gardens and Ft. Charlotte are just outside of downtown but within walking distance of each other (20 minutes ). To reach those two you should take the #10 bus from downtown (1.25 pp each way) only about a 10 minute ride, but it beats walking. The Bacardi plant is no longer in operation. The people to people program is best if your staying for a couple of days.

Thanks wwbev711. I forgot to mention - we will have our 22-month old daughter with us, so obviously our mobility and capability will be limited. Given that, which are the attractions that we should target? Which ones are must and which ones are good-to-be-sone?

The Versailles garden looks beautiful in photos. How worth is it a visit in a 1-day schedule?

Hi V

There is a lot to see and do in Nassau in a day. In my personal opinion one Caribbean fort is the same as another and every island has one. The same applies to straw markets. The staircase and the straw market can be seen in a matter of minutes.

The Ardastra Zoo with a 2 yr old is a worthwhile outing, the flamingo show and feeding the lorry parrots are great activities and somewhat unique to Nassau. Take note that the Pirate Museum is also a somewhat unique attraction. However it can be scary for children. My 5 yr old found some of the displays scary and wouldn't go back until he was 10.

I would suggest Ardastra zoo in the morning, then lunch at either Beach Club Cafe in Sandyport or at Compass Point (farther away in Gambier). Bring your bathing suit as both have beach access. The beach at Compass point is beautiful and well suited for kids.

In Freeport, there is shopping, restaurants and beaches in the Our Lucaya area. You could easily spend a day there. However if you want to see a truly spectacular beach try to get to Gold Rock Beach. There are some organized tours or you can rent a car. If you rent a car get good directions and keep a sharp lookout, the entrance is easy to miss. There is a nice walk from the road to the beach.

Another alternative for either Freeport or Nassau is Dolphin Encounters, you can swim with and interact with dolphins. Its up to you whether this would suit your daughter, but you could say you are doing it for her and just enjoy it yourself.

The "Nassau and Paradise Island" and "Downtown Nassau" maps at www.bahamas-on-line.com/bahamas-maps.html shows most of the places you listed.
