conch stand under bridge to Paradise Island

Has someone recently visited those stands that went there on a cruise? Do they still make the conch salad? do you know what the cost is? do you know what the taxi cost would be? is it worth going?

I have found that it is hit or miss as to availability--at least while staying at Atlantis==when they have it you will find it is awesome and very reasonable compared to restaurants.

Hi PMLOM - Welcome to the Forums!

There are conch stands under the bridge - the area is called Potter's Cay. From the cruise ship dock it would be about 7 mins. by cab ($8? $10?) or a 20 min. walk. The first few on the left seem to be busiest, and the conch salad is $10 for a big bowl. The one I go to is not under the bridge - it's about 1 block further along on Bay Street on the main road, all by itself, just across the road from Seafront Sushi.

Enjoy!

@PMLOM - I do believe that wwbev and Tigervette are saying it's not worth going. LOL

Have a great trip, whatever you decide to do!

Do you really want to go to a place where you take a chance of ruining your vacation with food poisoning? I think that is what both wwwbev and Tigervette are trying to say. Having lived in Nassau all of my life (some 40+ years), I can heartily agree with their take on eating there. While a meagre few booths have running water, most do not, and sanitary conditions are poor. If you're feeling brave, have a walk around first, watching to see how food is handled. That should help you make your decision.

For fresh conch salad, there are so many other places to go to enjoy it. Fish Fry on Arawak Cay is one place, and each place makes it just a little differently, so you can enjoy sampling at several restaurants. It's a short walk from the cruise terminal (20 - 30) minutes) or you can take the #10 bus from the stop at McDonald's for $1.25 each way. I'm not sure what a taxi will cost you, but it's best to walk a few minutes, and take a taxi from the British Colonial Hilton, as then you do not pay for driving around the one way streets in town to get turned around again.

I agree with you Dusty, about checking how the food is handled.

Without running water, I think the typical way that the conch salad is happening is that they're getting buckets of water out of the harbour, and rinsing and cleaning the conch in these buckets, as well as rinsing their knives and cutting boards in them as well. When they decide the water needs a change, they dump the bucket & fill it up again... "island style"

I also think that some of the Fish Fry 'restaurants' would be doing it this way too, at least some of the Western ones right on the water. So then it's maybe more a question of how clean the harbour water is at that particular vendor?

I would say that there are several dozen locals and a few visitors or cruisers getting conch salad at Potter's Cay on every day, and I don't think they're getting Bahama Belly or food poisoning afterwards. So, I'm not so ready to rule out Potter's Cay altogether and would go there (and do go there) if it were convenient to where I was at the time.

If what Sailexuma states about harbor water being used to rinse Conch for salad preparation, that is quite repulsive and, to say the least, quite unsanitary. Granted the Conch come from the sea but water quality in the harbor is no where as good as the open seas. The food preparation practices at Potter's Cay should be reported to the Health Department. But, on second thought, they probably are aware of the situation and just 'look the other way', unfortunately :-(
