Texting at Atlantis and Harborside or emailing

Family of 9 and wanting to keep in touch so we can gather...not sure on phone service how much to get that figured out...was hoping to be able to email or text. So could email people if wifi was available...COST? Reliable? Anyone have any current news on that there? I know you can use 15 minutes a day at the Library at Atlantis but that not much help if we are at a pool and want to meet up with them for lunch. Thanks for any current info on that.

There is a company that allows you to rent phones and mobile wifi hotspots for your vacation to the Bahamas. Maybe they can help? :) www.pocketwifibahamas.com

Keep in mind that buying a sim card, or renting a phone will also entail purchasing MINUTES for use from BTC Bahamas. Neither voice or Txt are free with these options.

You can buy a sim card at the Batelco store downtown for less.

I hate to show my ignorance...if I buy the sim card for everyone's current phones, then do we take the international deal with our carrier or how does that work? We could do with either just calling or texting or emailing just to keep in contact while there for one week.

Thanks!

You would need a sim card for ea. phone. (ea. phone must be an unlocked gsm phone 1900 mhz that currently uses a sim card.) Some phone will not use sims (verizon, boost mobile etc) and won't be useable.

With ea. sim card, you will need to purchase minutes ($.33 per minute local, $.05 txt local) For calls home, you still pay $1.99 or more per minute and $.50 per txt.

Data is available on a additional plan and ea phone would need a separate data plan.

For a weeks vacation, this would be way more than most people would care to do.

As for your current phones, depending on your service provider, you can turn you phones on international and pay per minute ($2.99 per minute, $.50 per txt outgoing, and data is VERY expensive. Check with your provider for details. Ea phone would need to be on the plan.

Bringing a laptop and finding a free wifi spot at McD's, Dunkin Donuts etc is usually the way to go.

You can check www.btcbahamas.com for details on prepaid calling and roaming charges.

OMG--lots of good info...thanks so much will give to my son to figure out what is best....we do take our kindles and computers to Europe and do the wifi but for this we need communication between the 9 people so we can get together or go to beach, restaurant etc so thinking more of phones, walkie talkie, etc....texts would be perfect or phone messages...

It's pretty outrageous that at a resort as expensive as Atlantis, they don't provide free wifi. But they don't, and they block out access to the widespread Bahamian wifi providers that charge ($13/day; $6/hr). The only option there seemed to be to sign up for their own wifi service at $22/day (no hourly option). Ouch! It does cover 4 devices though.

Not much is free at Atlantis, even the water. There are NO water fountains anywhere on the property. It's sort of like the airlines these days making so many amenities, once free, now called options to add to your basic seat fare. It's a way to keep advertised prices low to attract the most customers.

One thing that has been 'free' at Atlantis for a long time is 15 min. of Internet access daily for each guest in the Atlantis Library on their PC's.
