Cruising to Nassau

We are crusing in Oct and will be in Nassau for just 1 day. I am curious if anyone can give suggestions for activites. Also, would it be better to book an excursion through the cruise line or just explore on our own. I have traveled a bit so I am comfortable being on our own, but curious if there is good transportation and such from the ports to the city. Any information would be helpful! Thanks!!

I have done the same cruise a few times. It all depends on what you like to do. There is a straw market within walking distance of the dock, there are several excursions that are offered through the cruise line. If you want a beach day, you can buy a days pass to the Atlantis, or you could get a cab and have him take you to a beach.

Last year my daughters and I did the Blue Lagoon trip. What a waste of time. First they picked up a bunch of college kids from the Atlantis who were totally drunk at 9:00 in the morning. Then when we got to the Lagoon, there were no chairs available to sit one, and all the hammocks were taken. I would definitely avoid that excursion.

They also have the glass bottom boat, and tours of the island.

Good luck and enjoy!

Hi Rgmowen, here are some sites worth checking out for some excursions. You will be docking in the heart of Downtown Nassau so there are plenty of places to shop and to eat. You can take the #10 bus for $1.00 to get to Arawak Cay (Fish Fry) or to the zoo or the Casino at the Crystal Palace.

We loved Sea Island Adventures and anything from Stuart Cove is great too. You will have the best time, enjoy the Bahamas!!!!

Linday gave you great suggestions. If any of the tours listed are something you might want to do - you may consider booking directly with the company on their website or by phone. The cruise ships may offer the same excursions but they will cost more if you book on board.

The Powerboat Adventure is very good but it depends on how long your ship is in port - you may not get back in time be sure to ask the excursions operators when they return.

Have a great cruise and visit to Nassau.
