Thanks for all your input. It really helped us to enjoy an awesome trip. Thought I'd give back with some advice and observations in the hope that it may help a fellow traveler. Went June 23-27, 2009.
Stayed at Comfort Suites with two teenage boys.
Check in at 3 pm was a little hectic and the desk is not that friendly but everyone else at the hotel is very nice. We stayed in 500's. Very quiet even though by a busy street. Very clean and lots of room. Had a few issues like fridge was not cold. Literally took less than 5 minutes and a new one arrived bigger than the other one. One night the air conditioning wouldn't work (knob was stuck) and again within 5 minutes or less someone was there to fix it. Very impressed. Convenience was great. It really is literally next door to the Coral Towers. And it is closer to everything than the Beach Towers. Breakfast was OK, better and more peaceful by the pool. Cereal or bagel every morning just like at home.
The deep water dolphin encounter at Atlantis although sooo expensive was the highlight of our trip. It was just so awesome. You use these motorized propellers and I read the best thing is to dive down when the dolphins are swimming and I got to glide my hand by there bodies many times. I wish it had been longer but oh well I loved every minute of it.
The Flying Cloud catamaran snorkel was just OK. The boys thought the reef was lame. I thought it was good but not great. Not that many fish but the ones we saw were colorful. The water is really like a pool and warm too and the sail itself was relaxing and the crew nice and equipment good.
The weather was pretty good but if I had booked the afternoon Stuart's Cove trip we would have been rained out. We took the morning sail with flying cloud and it was beautiful when we went. It was cloudy the first two mornings but cleared up in the afternoon and it stormed and rained buckets the first two nights but that was OK b/c we were done with the beach. These were not your typical Caribbean rain showers they were storms lasting about an hour or two. The third day it was beautiful until around 2 and the dark clouds rolled in and it thundered and they closed all but a few of the pools, and when it started raining there was a stampede for the towers. The weather when it was nice was really nice in the mid 80's I am guessing and humid very humid.
Lunches were by the pool and were actually pretty reasonable with a good variety. Dinners - the first night we ate at Anthony's across from Comfort Suites that everyone recommends and says it's inexpensive. Well no - it was very expensive. Ex. glass of house wine - $11.00, small piece of no big deal chocolate cake $9.75. The grilled grouper was very good but my pasta dish with chicken was yuk. The chicken was so tough I couldn't eat it. The burger my son had was small but good. Would not recommend them except heard they are known for their ribs. Oh well. Second night we ate at the Poop Deck. Got there around 8 via taxi and were seated rather quickly. The food was really good and cheaper than but then you have to add the taxi so I guess came to about the same but better food and sitting on the deck was nice. The third night we did not have plans and that is a big mistake at the Atlantis. My advise make a reservation if you are planning to eat there. We got out around 7:30 pm I think and there was a two hour wait everywhere. We lucked out at the Atlas Bar and Grill that is in the casino and only had to wait about a half hour but they said it would be 2 hours. And believe it or not the food prices were very reasonable and it was good too. The last night we took a taxi to the Fish Fry and ate at Twin Brothers. Had conch fritters and cracked conch - very good and fairly reasonable as well.
You have to take the tube ride that is up on the Mayan pyramid that goes into a clear tube that is surrounded by sharks. It was awesome floating by those sharks and the ride itself is pretty tame. There's the other one that is a death defying slide and the boys did that but not me.
The Pina Colada at the lobby bar of Royal Towers was the best I've ever had! The beaches were awesome and never had trouble finding a chair. Friday was the busiest day and at poolside we got there in the afternoon and had a hard time finding a chair, but did. The pools empty out around 4-5 pm and you have it all to yourself as well as the beach. And the mornings as well - the grounds are amazing.
I let my 15 yr. old do the jet skiis. fyi they give them barely any instructions. I was scared to death but he did fine except that they called him back only after about 15 minutes and it was supposed to be a half hour but I didn't say anything b/c I was glad he was safe.
Very small airport and lots of waiting. I'd bring food with you if its around a meal time. The cafe food was disgusting and expensive.
I used Sandra's taxi and it was so comforting to walk out of the airport and see a sign with my name on it. We stopped at the grocery store and liquior store and it was just nice. If you have any other questions let me know.
Have a fun trip! WenJen
