cash and phones

Having never been to Nassau or Atlantis..two crucial questions. Do I need Bahamian money..it seems on most websites that I can use US dollars..true??

And,,,,will my ATand T smartphone work there as here or..do I need to make it international (easily done).

Thanks

No need to exchange currency. US and Bahamian currency are of equal value and accepted for all transactions. Just spend any B$'s before leaving, as it is near impossible to exchange outside of the Bahamas. Cell service here is a joke. Even with a US based carrier, you are still at the mercy of the local (BTC) service.

wwbev is right.. cell service is the pits.. but if you want ANY service you'll need to as your service provider to set up International calling for about $5.99 per mo. THen your calls are $2.79 per minute. Txt are $.50 per txt and data is crazy expensive. You'll pay for incoming calls, calls that go to voice mail ,smartphone pings and missed calls as well. Best to turn off Data while roaming, or better yet, just turn off your phone.

Go online to att.com and check out the rates.

Your AT&T Smart Phone will not work here. texting is much cheaper than calls. I have AT&T. I added 200 international texts for $10 per month.

Our verizon phones worked for a day and that was it. We just used a called card to phone home. (right outside one of the casino entrances, on the coral towers side, is a bank of pay phones and machines you can buy the card from :)

Anyone know if I can receive/check email at Atlantis? My problem is not making outgoing calls, it is leaving contact info for our dog's kennel!!!!

Guests at Atlantis enjoy free Internet access in the Atlantis Library for 15 minutes each day. The Library is located in the Coral Towers down the long hallway near the Blu Pool.

I had family visiting in August who used their AT&T smart phone without a problem, but their bill$ were high - so I recommend princess41's calling card suggestion, or you could consider paying for internet at the hotel by the day, and then use your account with Skype for your calls.

Regarding money - You may not even see Bahamian currency, as most touristic places just give American currency for change as a courtesy. If you get a chance, do try and see some - the bills are unique, as are the coins - e.g. the 'fishy' scalloped dime as well as the quarter with a Bahamian sailing sloop...!

Have a great trip!

I have an AT&T iPhone and never had a problem using it, turn off data roaming and add the international plan to keep your bill down
