Health help please

Hi, Freeport/Lucaya area experts, my daughter just got diagnosed with gluten intolerance and we are coming to the Lucaya next week. Trying to figure out if there are gluten free options on the menu in the larger restaurants. My wife called the Lucaya Radisson directly and they didn't know. More and more U.S. restaurants offer at least a couple of choices on their menu that are gluten free. I would really appreciate any help so we can enjoy the trip (planned 4 months back) and still stay true to the diet regimen she has been prescribed. Thanks very much!

One unrelated question, can you get a GPS device with up to date maps of GBI at KSR Rental Cars when we get the car? or do we need to find/download a map onto our own GPS before coming out there? Otherwise would picking up a road map on arrival do and if so, what's the best one?

Thanks again. We have been planning this trip for a few months meticulously and the diagnosis is late breaking news.

You won't find anyone who actually knows what gluten intolerance means, so no point to ask those type of questions. You will not get clear answers, and worse you will likely get incorrect ones as they naturally want to try to help you. You will need to use your own knowledge of what things contain gluten (ie anything with flour or wheat). So nothing breaded, no pizza, no pasta and watch things like thickened soups or desserts that you know probably contain wheat flour.

There will be several things on every menu that will actually be gluten free, it's just not something Bahamians are familiar with so it's not noted as such, and if you ask you will only get puzzled looks. Conch salad, for example, is gluten free, but you'll never see it advertised as such. A hamburger without the bun is gluten free, or unbreaded fish, a steak or a hot dog without the bun, for example.

Of course, you should also check with your doctor to know if it's a general advisory or if she's really really allergic. There is a huge difference. My mother in law simply feels better if she doesn't eat a significant amount of gluten, but her husband is near deathly allergic. If it's the former, you have some leeway, if it's the latter you don't.

No to the GPS question. But they'll give you a free map when you get the car, it's called the Bahamas Trailblazer and you'll see it all over town.

Thanks Johann and Sandra! very helpful. We are looking forward to the trip and watching the weather forecast with some trepidation. It keeps fluctuating between 30-60% rain on some of the days next week. When it rains, does it pour all day or does it come and go still allowing us to enjoy part of the day when it is clear?

Like anywhere in the tropics, it can rain some every day. However, the rain showers are short lived, and usually occur in the late afternoons or evenings. Typically the rainstorms will be heavy for about ten minutes, followed by long periods of sunshine. Keep in mind it's 80 degrees outside while this is happening - don't let it deter you from your plans. Most people just keep right on sunbathing, and those that don't just use the time to get a refill at the bar.

Don't worry about the forecast. You may get rain for a few minutes or an hour or two. Unlikely to get full days of rain and temps are great. Hopefully your daughter will enjoy the fresh grilled fish, salads and fruit! It is easy to find gluten free guidelines on line these days. Depending on the age(?) of your daughter you could always pack and bring along some "treats".
