How does Grand Bahama compare to Out Islands?

We've been searching like crazy for a place to do a quick inexpensive getaway to an out island. However, I just can't seem to find any place that offers affordable accommodations, doesn't require a car, and isn't too hard to get to.

I've started looking at Grand Bahama Island and thought some of the VRBO listings for Coral Beach Condos and Old Bahama Bay looked nice and also affordable. We are looking for a quiet getaway and would like to be away from crowds and cruise ship ports, but still have access to amenities like restaurants and dive shops. Does anything like this exist on Grand Bahama Island?

if you don't want to rent a vehicle, you'll probably have to stay in a hotel. or you can call a cab to get around. Grand Lucayan Resort, and Pelican Bay Hotel are both adjacent to Port Lucaya Marketplace which has a variety of restaurants, bars, shops and tour operators, as well as UNEXSO which is the largest dive operation on Grand Bahama, and also operates the dolphin program which allows guests to interact with dolpins on different levels (stand-in water encounter, swim, or dive with).

Pelican Bay Hotel has a relationship with Taino Beach Resort/Flamingo Bay Hotel & Marina, which sits on a beach, and has a number of watersport activites available through Lucayan Watersports. A complimentary ferry runs between Pelican Bay Hotel and Flamingo Bay Hotel & Marina.

I hope this helps a bit. if you have more questions you can send a tweet to @VisitGBI

Thanks. So do you or don't you need a car at Coral Beach Condos or Old Bahama Bay?

If you don't plan on going around much, mostly hanging out at the hotel, then no need to rent a car - will be less expensive to taxi or tour if you want to see something special. Coral Beach has a bar that has food, you can walk to Port Lucaya in about 15-20 minutes, and taxi there is only about $5.00.

Old Bahama Bay is really out by itself, but you can borrow bikes there to ride into the village, it has a restaurant, and you can do tours from there. If you plan to go into Freeport or Lucaya at all then a car would be a good idea because it's an hour drive.

Either is great for just chilling out on the beach and relaxing and maybe just doing one excursion or something along the way. Both have restaurants, bars, beach and pool, with excursions available nearby.

Thanks. What is the area around Coral Beach like? Are there lots of other buildings? Are they high-rises? Do cruise shippers come there? Trying to get a sense for how crowded it gets there.

There are a couple other condos nearby - between 7-10 stories, but nowhere in GBI is really crowded. No cruise shippers really, they're mostly clustered down by the Grand Lucayan about a 15 minute walk away.

Old Bahama Bay is by itself, very quiet, really relaxing. A great place to chill, and the best rooms on the island. Coral Beach will just depend on the particular unit you book - some are great, some not so great.

Never been to Old Bahama Bay but can vouch for Johann&Sandra's take on Coral Beach. We've been going there for almost 20 years (the beach, not the resort) and have no memory of it being crowded at all. We go Mar-Apr.

Is it true that they opened up the beach bar to the public again? We were not happy they closed it off a couple years ago. Nice place.
