Bahamian dollars and US currency

Hi

If you pay for something with US dollars cash do you get change in local currency or in US dollars?

Is there still an ATM available that dispenses US dollars near or in Port Lucaya? Do you get charged any fee for using it? (eg commission because it isn't the local currency).

And do you get charged any currency exchange commission fee if you use a US dollar card to pay for things in shops etc?

Thank you

R

The Bahamian dollar is pegged at par with the US dollar and the two are treated the same. Your change is often a mix of the two, but mostly Bahamian.

We just got back from Freeport. As windsordave mentions, the US and Bahamian dollars exchange at the same rate. Virtually every retailer at Port Lucaya gave us change in all US bills, even the vendors at the straw market. I actually wanted some Bahamian currency as change and had to ask for it.

There is an ATM at the Casino across the street from Port Lucaya that dispenses US currency. The ATM fee was $3.00, which I thought was very reasonable.

We haven't received our credit card statement yet, so I can't say if there is an additional fee for using the credit card in the Bahamas.

Thank you very much for the additional information - we already have to pay to convert sterling to US dollars so we're trying to avoid having to pay a second commission fee wherever possible.

US and Bahamian currency are used interchangably. No fees to convert for basic commerce. Doesn't matter which you have. The exception is if you want to gamble at the casino, you can only do that with US Dollars, not Bahamian Dollars. Of course, your credit card may charge you a foreign transaction fee no matter what currency it's in.

There is an ATM in the lobby of the Radisson that dispenses both USD and Bahamian Dollars, and another in the casino as tcdman mentions. The ATM at Port Lucaya dispenses only BSD, but if you still have some left at the end of your trip, you can usually go up to any store or restaurant and ask them to change you for USD.
