FPO- CLT: Reclaim, recheck bags AND re-enter security??

Hello,

We are traveling to Freeport with a connection (to and from) in Charlotte. Last time we connected in Charlotte we were traveling from Turks and Caicos, what a nightmare! We actually had to leave the terminal, reclaim our bags, recheck them AND go through security all over again without missing our connection. We are debating traveling only with carry-ons this time. Don't know if this is an airport or airline issue, we usually fly American to other Caribbean destinations and have always reclaimed our bags at our final destination... Has anyone had a similar experience at the Charlotte airport (US Airways) returning from Freeport? Thanks!

If you are flying into Charlotte on USAirwarys, then a connecting flight on USAir to Freeport, then you should be able to check your luggage all the way through. If you are flying on one airline to Charlotte, then another airline to Freeport, you will need to do the baggage reclaim and recheck dance again unless the two arilines have a baggage transfer agreement. If they have one, then you should be able to check your bags all the way through. Call your airlines and find out.

FYI, USAir has a codeshare arrangement with Bahamasair, so you should be able to check your luggage all the way to Freeport if these are the two airlines in question.

Once arriving in Freeport you will need to clear immigration, then collect your baggage and clear customs. If you are staying in Freeport, then you will need to just find a taxi and head to your hotel. If you are transferring to another flight , you will need to check in again, recheck luggage, reclear security to get to your gate.

On the way home, you will pre-clear US customs in the Bahamas, so that when you walk off the plane in Charlotte, you are free to go wherever with no further formalities. That is one of the great conveniences of having the US pre-clearance facility in the Bahamas. (But again, if the airlines do not have a baggage transfer agreement, then you will need to do the baggage dance again.) Call the airlines and find out. It is a hassle, but it is largely the airlines that dictate this silly arrangement.

People flying to and from Freeport from the USA can clear US Customs in Freeport and your bags will be checked all the way through. Turks & Caicos doesn't have a pre-clearance facility like Freeport does.

The only exception is if your flight is not a real connection - ie two airlines that do not have a codeshare agreement pasted together as one ticket like Expedia for example sometimes does, even though they are not true connections. If it's US Airways all the way then there is no problem.
