We're heading to Cat Island for the first time on New Years Day. Staying at Fernandez Bay Village. Will we need a car?
How long are you staying? If only for a long weekend, you'll probably find that the kayaks and bikes available at FBV will take you wherever you want to go (e.g. you can easily ride bikes to reach The Hermitage). But every time I've gone -- on each occasion it was for a full week -- we've rented a car for 2-4 days. Love exploring beaches and visiting Greenwoods, Hawks Nest and Sammy T's for lunches; you need a car for that.
Thanks. Staying 5 days.
I think you will want a car for 1 or 2 days to explore the island and meet the locals. Cat Island is a wonderful place with great islanders; a wonderful part of being there is getting out and experiencing the local flavor and people. Drive up to Orange Creek, eat conch salad and drink a cold one at Derrick and Yardi's in Bennett Harbor, stop and talk to Pat in Orange Creek, check out Sammy T's. Take it slow, it is a drive up the coast. Stop often and meet the people.
I second that. It's also good to have a car for a bit o so you can get out to grocery shop and booze store. But Fernandez staff might give you a lift if that's all you want to do.
