cat island beaches

We are planning a trip to the island this spring and are looking at Cat Island. I have 2 concerns - getting there and reports of garbage on the beaches. How bad is it really.? We have been to belize which had a similar problem but was otherwise gorgeous. Is it possible to charter a plane out of Nassau and if so what kind of $$$. There will be 7 of us.

We enjoyed the beaches on Cat. The windward Atlantic side certainly has its' share of flotsam but I would not call it garbage. The Exuma Sound side has some of the best beaches that you'll find anywhere. Port Royal on the north is great also.

Depending on where you intend to stay, you can fly into New Bight airport with Continental/Gulfstream out of Ft. Lauderdale. I don't believe that there are direct flights into the northern airport ( Arthur's Town ). We used Southern Air which required an overnight stay in Nassau.

The majority of the beaches on Cat Island are in their natural pristine state, that is you will find flotsam and jetsom on some of the beaches some of the time. That's because the island is 50+ miles long with beaches almost the entire length, the island is sparsly inhabited and they don't have crews of people raking the beaches like they do a major resorts.

The amount od debris you see on any given beach will depend on what the weather and surf conditions have been in the days and weeks prior to your visit. You'll find more debris on the windward side beaches vs. the leeward side beaches.

To answer your other question, yes it is possible to charter a plane out of Nassau (or Miami or Ft. Lauderdale) the cost for a plane that can hold 7 pax would probably something like $1,500 to $2,000US. Check out www.airchartersbahamas.com for starters or do a google search for "Airplane Charters, Bahamas" for plenty of other links.

Just to be clear, you will be hard-pressed to find ANY windward beach on ANY Caribbean or Atlantic island that doesn't have flotsam and jetsam. It's not a function of the islanders' dedication to fighting pollution; the beaches are merely victim to society's "disposal" of trash in general. Most of that stuff does not come from the island itself. And, among that trash can be found treasure as well, such as glass fish floats and bottles with messages (really!)

I've seen a lot of windward beaches, and unless you are at a resort where someone cleans them up all day, they all have stuff on them. I'd rather deal with a little junk on the beach and have it to myself!

Most (99%+) of the hotels and homes are on the leeward side of the island and the beaches are beautiful. The windward side can be rough and it does have flotsam as do most windward sides of any island. If there are 7 people it maybe cheaper to charter a plane from either Ft. Lauderdale or Nassau. There are however plenty of commercial flights on Continental , et al.

Cat Island does not have much night life and very little commercialism, but it is one of the purist, natural islands to be found anywhere. The people are fantastic too.

We paid around $ 400.00 pp. round trip from Ft. Lauderdale on Gulf Stream Air. As far as garbage on the beach we didn't see any on the exuma sound side. Also, if you're looking for a place we stayed at Sammy T's and loved it...
