Can anybody help me to choose a place to stay in Eleuthrea ?

Hi everybody

My wife and myself want to relax in the beach for a few days and then move around the island.

Should we stay in the north , close to the best beaches or should we rent a house in the center of the island and move by car ?

Are the beaches in the north so different and unique ?

Thanks for the cooperation

Mariano from Argentina

Check out Villa Sylphide in North Palmetto Point. Centrally located and excellent accommodations.

I think it would be a hassle to pick up and move to other accomodations, if only staying a short time in Eleuthera (7-10 days). We always stay near Governor's Harbour (central) and take day trips to other parts of the island. We've been able to hit every part of the island doing this from Harbour Island and Current in the north, to Cape Eleuthera and Bannerman Town (lighthouse beach) in the south. Although it's pretty hard to do in one week. It took us a couple of years to see everything and we usually stay about 10 days each time.

We found North Palmetto Point to be a good location. The beach is beautiful in front of Villa Sylphide, and it is extremely private. It is an easy drive to Lighthouse beach in the south, and approximately the same distance to Harbour Island ferry. Of course you will need a rental vehicle. I would suggest you arrange a jeep like vehicle if you want to go to Lighthouse beach.

Your list is missing a visit to Harbour Island. H.I. is gorgeous. I've been there six times one one day excursions from Nassau. It is that nice.

Hi Mariano, your plans sound fine if that's what you want to do. Many feel that Spanish Wells & Harbour Island are nice but after visiting they are not impressed. It is all up to you what you want with your time. Check out Tigervette's site's & do a search for Spanish Wells, this may help if you haven't done so. Staying central, for a first visit would be wise. Also if you haven't done a "Google Earth" search of the island, it is 110 miles long. You may be able to combine certain places in your plans. Depending on your flight schedule you might want to stay 1 day each at home the beginning & end of your stay. Many people make plans but find once they get there they fly out the window, so to speak. If you haven't do a search for Eleuthera Vacation rentals, vrbo is a popular site. Also your budget for the trip which is up to you but we don't know that. The beaches are all spectacular, in their own way. If you have more questions please ask, if you would like to provide more info, all the better that we can help. Cheers sas

With that itinerary it seems like you're going to spend a lot of time driving. Last year we stayed a week in North Palmetto Point and made it south to LIghthouse Beach and as far north as Glass Window Bridge. And I thought we spent too much time in the car. Eleuthera has so many beautiful beaches; and you don't have to travel far to get to them. I would keep 2 of those places on your list; and play the rest by ear. Just around central Eleuthera you have French Leave Beach, Twin Coves, Ten Bay, Double Bay, Alabaster Bay...and all are unique. I think for a first time visit, central Eleuthera is the best area to stay. There are lots of rentals available...VRBO is a great place to start. Good luck with your visit!

Hi there

I thought I would add my 2pennies as I just got back from a 2 day trip to Eleuthera.

I would definitely recommend renting a car if you stay on this island as It's 120miles long and there are no pavements. It's also super hilly and not ideal for walking anywhere.

In terms of lodgings, I think it really depends on your budget. In Governers town there are a number of self contained units which are family operated. They are very reasonable and you get a really authentic island experience. The units tend to be like an apartment with full kitchen and living room, Tv etc and a short walk to the beach. I would definately recommend somewhere such as Rainbow Inn or Tropical Dreams Motel (something like number 4 and 5 on tripadvisor Inns respectively) very reasonable in cost.

Rainbow Inn's restaurant is also like 6 in the whole of the Bahamas. The food is delicious and the steaks are pretty darn good. (Ill be posting my review shortly) if your budget can stretch then somewhere like Pineapple fields is really nice. They are located on a stunning stretch of beach which has the brilliant white sands (with a touch of pink) and the clear waters. Gorgeous. They also have a really nice restaurant called Tippys attached to the grounds and their food is delicious. All fresh local produce.

I found from my travels that the nice stretches of beach tend to be more towards the south of the island. Rock sound had a pretty stunning beach wow!

Not to discount the beaches in Governors town at all. And as I said the beach at pineapple field was pretty awesome. There were only 6 people on it ....including us!!!

Harbour island differs from Eleuthera in that its a lot more expensive and its really tiny. You can get round the whole island in a golf buggy but its very very pretty. I would recommend The Landing for accommodation. Very reasonable but a really stylish boutique hotel.

You definately need a car for Eleuthera as you will be on the move but there's enough to do on the island.

Also to book all my flights, I used a website called www.BahamaGo.com who seem to specialise in all domestic flights to the Out islands. Save you having to call different airlines and checking different websites.

I hope this was helpful.

My .02 cents based on a 3 trips to Eleuthera. I would get a house somewhere near Governor's Harbour. Take 1 day and go north and do your Spanish Wells day or Harbour Island. You could also have time to visit a beach up there also if you got moving early. Take another day and go south to Lighhouse Beach. Not sure what you would do at Cape Eleuthera unless you are going to do a tour. I would pick one or the other and not make 2 trips down south. For the other 4 days, I would just hang out at your house beach and then make short trips when you want, either to shop in Governor's Harbour, visit a local beach in the afternoon, pick up fish at the dock for dinner, etc.
