We returned Sunday from a 9 night trip to the Georgetown area of Great Exuma (NOT a Sandals or AI type person so sorry I do not know anything about that resort) and we had a wonderful trip! Thanks so much to those of you who answered my questions and volunteered tips about boating, snorkeling, restaurants, etc. We rented Sea Star house and it worked out very well for us for a central location with a killer view. We also spent one night at Augusta Bay Resort and returned there to eat 4 times (2 breakfasts, 2 dinners) and I highly recommend it for those looking for a hotel rather than a house.
We ate at Santana's, Catch-a-Fire (x2), Peace and Plenty (x2), Chat n Chill (x2), Big D's, Eddie's Edgewater, Driftwood Cafe, Pallapa Grill at Grand Isle, Splash at Palm Bay, St. Francis Resort, Augusta Bay and "at home" so I know just a bit about the restaurants. I would definitely recommend (from our experience) St. Francis (just don't order steak like one in our party did- the rest was wonderful- tuna and lobster), Chat and Chill (great fish), Santana's (lobster and grouper both great), Eddie's (grouper and the fish sandwich both very good), Big D's (fish sandwich, divine conch salad, good but small fish entree), Pallapa (seared tuna lunch and salads), Augusta Bay (good Friday night buffet, good fish, very good omelets for breakfast). We wanted to go but did not make meal time at Exuma Point (went up to see it and swam on a deserted beach) and Houseman's (drove by on our last day but did not get time to go there). We shopped at Exuma Market, Smittey's and Shop Rite/Price Rite (forgot the name) and rented a boat for the week from Minn's for exploring.
Again, great trip, perfect weather, gorgeous water, friendly and helpful people on the island, and an overall wonderful time. If I can help, feel free to ask questions!
The saying on all the Eleuthera information always says "It is not for everyone" and I totally agree that is the out island caveat but for those who understand the pace, know what to expect, and respect the beauty, dignity and friendliness of the people, Great Exuma is a beautiful and special experience!
