How far to swim with pigs and Thunderball grotto?

We are interested in visiting Great Exuma but are interested in renting our own boat from Minns. Is it possible to drive ourselves to swim with the pigs and Thunderball grotto or is this too far for a boston whaler in a day? We know that there is an all day tour but would like to avoid the crowds and be more leisure. Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question but I have been unable to figure out the distance and what type water we would be crossing.

impossible to get there on your own- a very, very long distance- you cannot take Minn's boats out of the harbour but you could not do it in a whaler even if you could. You need to get with a tour operator with a larger and faster boat for that trip.

These are all day tours some as long as 8.5 hours.

If you use Facebook. Check likes, some tours listed but probably not all, then check reviews on T/A.

Swimming with the pigs and the grotto are just a couple of things. Take the tour (we have used Exuma Cays Tours multiple times) to get to enjoy/see additional sites that Exuma has to offer.

ZZmom, why don't you stay on Staniel Cay instead and rent a Whaler there. From SC, getting to see the swimming pigs is only a mile or two ride.

Papafox you are very wise. We just book Staniel Cay Yacht Club for May 2013 in one of the new cottages. We were trying to stay on Stocking Island and venture out but found Staniel Cay and changed our mind. We are thrilled with our decision. Thank you.

7 little piglets were recently born, and are extraordinarily cute. By your May visit, they should be part of the swimming gang!

Be sure and also check out Sandy Cay (3 miles NW of Staniel) during low tide as there is a nice sandbar.

None of the boat companies will let you take a whaler outside of Elizabeth Bay, because there are over 60 miles of islands out there and they will never find you if you get lost or something happens. You need to go on a guided tour. We went with Coastal Adventures, and whilst it was pricey, it was an outstanding day out. You leave early at 8am, and in our case there were 8 of us on the boat. We dived for conch for a conch salad snack on a sand bar, visited numerous out islands to stock on local drinks, dived thunderball grotto, swam with nurse sharks and the pigs, had lunch at Staniel Cay, and hand fed the iguanas. very relaxing and fun, but probably did 100 miles.
