Finger lakes overnight

Hi,

my husband and I are traveling late Oct and are going to Niagara Falls for one night. we then want to travel to the Finger Lakes district for one night before traveling to Bennington for a few days.

We will probably do the first Maid of the Mist boat tour at Niagara and then get in the car, so will be there for the afternoon.

We want to know where the best B and B is, preferably Victorian and backs on to water so we can have a glass of wine ( or2) watching the sunset over the lake. Hubble House which looked perfect unfortunately is closed for renovations.

Would the Glen Watkins area be good to stay in ? As we probably the next morning may do the gorge walk.

we would like to visit a few wineries on the way, or book a sedan for a few hours of wineries in the afternoon before we check in to our B and B. what time do the wineries open til?.

is this all achievable?

thanks for any input

julie

Seeing Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes Region is a good choice: great lake views, good wineries, and Watkins Glen as well. Look at the TA listings for B&Bs/Inns in Dundee, Watkins Glen, and Hector NY and I'm sure you will find something to your liking. You can see locations, pictures and the comments of hundreds of guests, not just the one or two who will respond here.

On your trip you could come down the West side of Seneca Lake from the Thruway, maybe stop at a winery or two, and then get to your B&B. There are some nice restaurants in the area as well. Walking "the Glen" is highly recommended. Then up the East side of the lake to the Thruway to head on to Bennington. This will be an aggressive timeline but can give you a flavor of the region.

Just be careful to stay away from this area the couple weekends there are big races at the Watkins Glen International Racetrack. It is verrrry busy then and things get booked up a year in advance.

There are no events at Watkins Glen International at the end of October. Also, be aware that many places in the area require a two night minimum stay over weekends (at least) at that time of the year. You'll want to call the park office at (607) 535-4511 just to make sure that the gorge trail is still open. This past season the trail was closed on Nov. 4th, but it is weather dependent.

Thank you for your quick reply. yes, we will be on a tight schedule, but a couple of wineries on the way down the west side sounds good.Once we get to Bennington we have a few dya sthere for a break. We didnt realise we were so late in the season. We had thought the leaves will still be there etc, but may not have that privilage. But it still will be a beautiful drive. Thanks again.

...to find a B&B that will be a perfect fit for you, take a look at: http://www.stayfingerlakes.com/bnbmap.php It seems to be the most comprehensive listing of B&B's in the Finger Lakes region.

Have fun!

To watch a sunset over the lake remember you need to be on the east side of the lake. On the west side you get a beautiful sunrise. Perhaps head down the west side of Seneca Lake and up the east side of Cayuga Lake the next morning to continue on your way.
