When is pausa pranzo at the Fortezza train station?

Does anyone know? We have to buy tickets there, and that would affect when we want to arrive/what train we take.

No idea if there is one.

Where are you going to/coming from.

What tickets?? Dates??

German and Italian trains stop at this station. Dependant on where you are going and when will determine which ticket you need.

According to the trenitalia website, there is no ticket office. There is a ticket machine, but it only sells tickets for Italian Regional trains. If you are travelling long distance, it would be advisable to buy your tickets before going to Fortezza.

Ok good to know its just a ticket machine (may it be working that day!). It's regional tickets that we need to buy - we're coming by train from Austria, but can't buy those regional tickets for the second leg of our trip in advance. Does anyone know if you can buy the Sudtirol Mobilcard from the Trenitalia ticket machines (or only from local tabacchi/tourist offices)?

Can we assume therefore that you are going from Fortezza on a Regional trainline e.g. Brunico, Dobbiaco line or are you going elsewhere.

If you give exact information where you are travelling from and too and on which date maybe more accurate info will be forthcoming. It is important because of the difference in Austrian and Italian national rail.

e.g. You can buy the card and it is valid from Brennero. Number of different train Links from Austria (e.g. Innsbruck) to Brennero.

According to this you can buy it from all ticket machines in the province - hence Fortezza should be ok

Sorry - yes we are traveling from Salzburg via Innsbruck to Brunico, and will purchase the Salzburg-Fortezza leg of the trip in Austria (or online), but have to buy the regional tickets for the second leg (or mobilecard) at our first stop in Italy, which is Fortezza. Our train does not actually stop long enough in Brennero (or at all) to get the tickets there unfortunately.

Thanks Gifzwerg, I completely glossed over that sentence!

I only pointed it out because the Italians no longer co-operate with the Austrians/Germans on Trains/info/tickets. The cross border Intercity services are all German www.bahn.de and Austrian www.oebb.at run services. e.g. 5 direct services daily from Munich to Verona.

This non co-operation from the Italians makes it difficult to get through tickets or advance purchases. This wasn't the case about3 years ago or so.

Hence if you used www.trenitalia.com to try to see your connections with the German/Austrian train at Fortezza it wouldn't come up.

So book your Salzburg-Fortezza part with www.oebb.at

and get your mobilcard from the machine.

Where are you going after Brunico (e.g. returning home via??)

Please note if you intend returning via Austria/German trains from the Italian side you must also use www.bahn.de or www.oebb.at to pre-book.

As we found, you can purchase a Mobilcard for travel in South Tyrol at the ticket machine in the station. It only takes cash, 5 or 10 euro notes, plus coins and gives change.

Yes - I meant to update this after our trip. You can purchase them from the machine (there is no manned ticket window). Just note that there are two ticket machines - one for TrenItalia tickets (if you're traveling beyond the Alto Adige - it won't vend any local train tickets) and one for the local Sud Tirol system (this is the one you want). And also note that you have to validate the ticket in the Sud Tirol machine, not the TrenItalia machine (if I remember correctly, the national train validation machine is yellow and the regional ones are green or blue).
