day hikes in the Dolomites

My friends and I would like to spend a week doing day hikes somewhere in the Dolomites or elsewhere in the Italian Alps. Where would be a good place for us to stay? We would like to avoid renting a car, if possible.

Hello - what time of year are you coming? What kind of accommodation are you looking for?

I'd always recommend the Val Gardena (not that I'm biased in any way!) because from early July till the end of September, once you're here you don't need to use a car to get around. You can buy a Gardena Card which costs around €60, and covers you for 7 days unlimited use of all the buses and cable cars in the valley, and also the Sella Ronda bus which takes you into the neighbouring valleys.

If you have a look back at previous posts, Vagabonda gives lots of details of useful websites. My favourite is www.valgardena.it, which is the official site of the Tourist Board - you can find out all sorts about accomodation, activities etc.

Good luck
