Where on Long Island?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are travelling to Long Island from August 23rd to 26th before travelling to New York for a few days. We would like to stay somewhere with a nice beach and good restaurants, but we don't really want to stay in the Hamptons. We'll have a car while on Long Island and would like to travel to the Hamptons for the day. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good location to stay?

Thanks so much!

Try Greenport in the North Fork. Beaches may not be as good as in the Hamptons, but prices are better and there are great restaurants. You can easily do a day trip to the Hamptons via the ferry from Greenport to Shelter Island, then pick up the South Fork ferry at the other end of the island.

Try the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach! It's very modern and pretty, set right on the beach. It has a restaurant onsite called Atlantica that is very tasty and renowned for it's creative cuisine and delicious seafood recipes. It can be a little expensive both the hotel and restaurant but worth it and it's only about. 45 minute drive from Manhattan! There are also dozens of local restaurants within walking distance...let me know what kind of food you like and I can make some recommendations!!Good luck, have a safe and happy trip :)

Best beaches on Long Island are on the East End---The END..Montauk. During August the town will be in full swing Summer Season. Great spot for dinner--The Harvest.

Drive out and stop in one of the Hamptons on the way. If you are looking for a leisurely drive..drive straight through on Main Street and it will take you through all the Hamptons and small towns on the South Shore. You can stop where you want.

"...We would like to stay somewhere with a nice beach and good restaurants, but we don't really want to stay in the Hamptons. "

The best beaches are on the south shore at the ocean. That would include Long Beach, the Hamptons, Montauk and also Fire Island....There aren't a lot of other options on/near the south shore with hotels. It would help us help you to know why you don't want to stay in the Hamptons. But it wouldn't make any sense to stay in Long Beach and do a daytrip to the Hamptons since they're so far away. So.....your options are on the North Fork at a Bay Beach like in Greenport or Jamesport. On Shelter Island which is inbetween the 2 forks or Montauk which is past the Hamptons. If you're looking for something affordable in the Hamptons, try the Hampton Maid in Hampton Bays which is not as fancy as the Hamptons further east.
