New to Mexico travel

Hi, my husband and I are on a tight budget but would like to visit Mexico with our week off at the beginning of June. Neither one of us have been to Mexico so we have no clue where to start. Does any one have recommendations for a more affordable city on the beach on either coast? We are in our late 20s and both professionals. We are definitely hoping to spend some time on the beach, but are equally interested in recreational activities. Thank you!!

Are you specifically looking for a city?? Do you scuba dive or kayak. IF so, the sea of cortez is nice. Desert mountains meets ocean. The only real city would be La Paz. More of a Mexican city than gringo tourist city. Though there are services for the independent tourist. You can also rent a place in Cabo Pulmo. It's about 2.5 hrs south of La Paz or 1.5 hours north of Cabo San Lucas. A more recreational place. endless, empty beaches, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, but you must be able to entertain yourself. It is just a small, all solar village, a couple resturants, fishing, bungalows to rent. 60-80 per night with full kitchens. Go and get a book on Mexico. it will help with the ideas, I like moon publications over lonely planet.

Hope this helps.

It does help to know what kind of activities you would like to do, and your budget limit.

Off-hand, I would recommend Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan for first-timers for a relaxing week.

Each also offers very affordable restaurants to give you a great sampling of Mexican cuisine.

If you want to explore ruins and experience some nice beaches, go the Playacar or Playa del Carmen area south of Cancun. Cancun is wonderful too, but its quite more expensive.

If you are into SCUBA diving, definitely go to either Cozumel or Cabo, i.e. Sea of Cortez area.
