Vacation to Mexico City and another Mexican destination...

We are starting to plan a trip to Mexico City to see some family in February or March of next year.

We're in our 30s and have never traveled "south of the border".

We are most likely going for 3-4 days and then want to move onto another part of Mexico for a 3-4 day beach holiday.

What are some good options on places to go, and especially how to get there?

Are trains the best option? Are rental cars and highway travel easy (and/or safe)?

Thanks in advance we appreciate the help!

There is no passenger train system in Mexico - inter-city travel is by first-class bus (which is way superior to Greyhound). However the nearest beach to Mexico City is Acapulco and that is a 5-hour bus journey and not to everyone's taste. One option would be to fly into Mexico City and then get an internal flight to Cancun where you can spend a few days on the beach (not necessarily in Cancun itself - Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, etc. are all good options). You should be able to get a flight into Mexico City and out of Cancun for not much more than a simple return ticket.

Safe??? Lots of beaches. What are you looking for? Someplace simple like Zipolite or one of the cartel mega resorts like is found in Cancun? Budget can be a factor in making your choice.
