Where to go for Winter Break 2008-2009?

We just found out our child is home from school for 16 days in December for Christmas/New Year's. We are thinking of flying to California for 1 week to visit with relatives and then flying to Mexico for 1 week to relax. We had thought of taking a cruise, but none of the itineraries offered met our needs. We would like to get a head start on planning since both airlines and hotels book quickly during the holidays.

We have been to Cancun and Playa del Carmen, but are unfamiliar with the beach resorts along the Pacific Coast of Mexico. So many to choose from ... Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Ixtapa, Acapulco. Our child is 9 years old and enjoys playing in the sand, ocean and pool. Husband would like to snorke. Wife wants to sunbathe and relax. Any pros/cons to these resort towns? Example ... proximity to the airport? Couple vs. family oriented? Just plain "crazy" during holidays?

Thanks ... East Coast Family

The beaches of Cabo aren't like Cancun or Playa. For one, the sand is much more coarse. There aren't many swimmable beaches in Cabo because of the strong undertow. Medano Beach, near the marina in Cabo is the most well known.

Los Cabos is made up of 3 areas. San Jose del Cabo is a quaint Mexican village close to the airport. There are resorts located on the beach in San Jose. The corridor is in between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas and offers resorts. Cabo San Lucas is where everything happens. You can find lodging from high end to B&Bs. Plenty of places to dine, nightclub life and excursions to take.

Cabo climate is very different from mainland Mexico. It is an arid, desert climate, not the lush, tropical feel of Playa. Don't get me wrong, Cabo is very beautiful, but don't expect the same climate as Playa.

Thanks for the reply ... the climate description reminds me of Aruba. Any comments on the other resort towns mentioned in my question?
