Groceries and Side Trips

Will be in Loreto at Christmas time. There are some essentials that we enjoy but not certain if they have them in Loreto. We would like to have real butter and cream for our coffee and seafood. Wondering if they sell it at the larger mercado downtown?

Also is it worth a trip into La Paz at all? We plan on going out to the islands for a day trip and possibly out to the mountains to see the original mission. Have I missed anything? There is not a great deal of info on the internet about Loreto. Thanks in advance!

Lots of cream and real butter in Loreto . It's a great town of over 12,000 people. Take a trip to the south for the day , great beaches , just 10 kms . You will fall in love with it .

Of course there is butter and cream. You will find nearly everything you could need or want in the grocery department. You sound like foodies - so be sure to check out Baja California produced olive oil and the local ice cream as well. Fish is fresh and plentiful and chicken has much more flavour. It isn't dipped in bleach like we do up north. You will eat to your hearts' content. On Sunday, there is a big market in the arroyo just north of Loreto town. There are fresh meats, fish, fruits and vegetables. You'll also find honey if you are lucky. The market also has an ecclectic mix of merchandise (new stuff mostly -not crafts). There are food and ice cream stands selling snacks as well. If you are interested in Mexican crafts, you will find lots of neat stuff in the tree covered lane just west of the cathedral. The prices here are excellent compared to other Baja destinations. Even better if you bargain a bit. LaPaz is very worth the trip. It is a beautiful town. There is a lot of good accomodation, history, shopping, etc. The food is excellent. I love shrimp tacos at Bismarkcito, a large seafood place right on the beautiful, clean Malecon. Be sure to look at the art on the Malecon. It's all nautical themed whimsy statues.(think Mariachi conch shells and snails). There are galleries, theatres, terrific restaurants, pleasant parks, and historic sites all within easy walking distance in La Paz. The drive between Loreto and LaPaz is stunningly beautiful. Stop in one of the starbuck style coffee shops in the prosperous farming town of Consitution for your mid day snack. You may be stopped at a military check point on the road. Don't be alarmed. They are sucessfully keeping the Baja safe for travelers and keeping the drug cartels out of the area. They size you up as a tourist pretty fast and wave you through with a smile.

Oh my goodness! Glad we are going there for Christmas holidays. Been to a lot of places in Mexico but Loreto sounds amazing and quaint. I don't think we will need to go to La Paz! Thanks to all for the great info. Plan to eat well out and in the rental, snorkel, tan, meet wonderful locals and go kayaking!
