Interesting article on November 14 from Washington Post and the comments are encouraging.

I messed the link up, maybe soeone else can do it properly.

I found the comment, to the WaPo article, to be appropriate.

Exactly. The comment was right on, too. When the page comes up, type Acapulco in the search box, hit "Enter" and there is the Nov 14 entry.

The Federal government are pouring money into Acapulco but much of it is still being pocketed by government officials. You can change the politicians but you can't change the bureaucrats.

Just like the Zihuatanejo mayor...he sold the rights to the fishing pier and the Zihua Bay to Fonatur's...and ran off with the money and bought a hotel in Cancun. Left workers with no pay checks, town with no garbage pick up, etc...got to love it!!

I think it is very unfair to the people. Every penny counts and should not be so poorly mismanaged.

Is there any deterrent in Mexico which may prevent the words "politician" and "corruption" from remaining synonymous?

Yes, LaCallie. It used to be a criminal offense to call a politician corrupt with certain jail time. Whether the accusation was true or not was irrelevant (it still counted as defamation). It is now merely a civil offense but still illegal.
