Beach and Hotel pool guests.....beware!!!

Just got in from a bit of chatting with some friends here and discussing the situations !!

Really all is normal but heard there are some of those bad ones always looking for an unsuspected victim... A reminder... keep your eyes and ears open about you at all times.....There are some people that distract you and clean you out.. So be aware or do not give them the opportunity to take advantage of you!! Or do not carry all with you!!!

Ones friend was at the pool of a very popular Hotel on the strip (comes every year for many years and has the same comfortable spot at the pool every year) and during her getting settled a couple came to try to set up their chair/s between or next to her daily reserved chairs? When she asked them why and what they were doing etc., they seemed confused and continued their distractions, then moved to another area of the pool and soon changed their minds to leave. Good ridden!! Only to discover a bit later when she looked into her beach bag for the room key, (which was still there) but wallet, cash and credit cards were all missing……………………….Big Distraction!!!!!

Within 2 hrs. they charged up to $2000.oo USD . I know it is a band/group of them going around now, working together, as they usually check CC card charges with picture IDs. ???? Specificly US or foreign CC.So be aware, keep your eyes open and do not get too comfortable with in the surroundings. They are all over, marking you and anyone else that they can distract to take advantage of…………..

It is their job and they get good at it!!!!! Bummers all over the world!!!

Enjoy but!!!.... Eyes open; more specifics..Tjhese were a couple and spoke with foreign accent!!! Not sure why the Hotel’s security was not on the ball?? Maybe as the hotel is large they missed that?? One advantage to smaller hotel with lots of security. As I said this could happen anywhere; Restaurant with lots of activity, on the beach, bus stop etc.

Good info Acasun I am always vigilant on the beach but much less so around the pool. Ill be more alert. Also those larger chains have pretty good security at least the FA and Emporio.

I try to pop into the Emporio to look around and they are all over me wondering what I am doing. I don't like wristbands but those guards look at them believe me and most inquire unless they see you with a known guest. But theft can surely happen at any hotel.

LOL. Truck. They did the same when I came to visit at the FA. Good advice, always. I carry a little card pack (leather that I bought at the ACA aiport) in one pocket and my money in another. I always leave my room key with the hotel people when I go out. When I go to the beach I take about 500 pesos in a shirt pocket and the Cabana staff are really vigilant about who goes where. The beach is public, so you can't pick your neighbours...but you can move if you don't feel right about it.

Just wondering, did this person use their beach bag to "RESERVE" their chair? I've seen way to much of that, aside from the fact that it irritates me when people think they OWN the same chair every day.

Also, I'm wondering how they could charge up that much in two hours????? Anytime I have multiple questionable charges, ESPECIALLY in foreign currency, a security hold is slapped on my card immediately until I call.

In any event, hopefully the place they used the cards have security cameras and they will be caught. Also, why in heaven's earth would you take all your credit cards with you to the pool area to begin with????? Room safe comes to mind.

Does anyone really need to be bringing credit cards or excessive amounts of cash or valuables to the beach or pool? That's what hotel safes are for. I only use a beach bag for a towel and a bottle of water. Other than when going for a swim, the pesos stay in a pocket.

There are no secure places when you are surrounded by others poolside. As to the hotel security being 'on the ball' --- how would they know the people weren't together???? I've seen wives walk over and take money out of "supposedly" hubby's wallet tucked under a towel. Is that a theft happening? Should I report it? Should the security tackle the wife on her way "out" ???? Just sayin ' :)

Well some visitors come for several months and are well known by the staff and special favors are done as you know happens allot here!

I am sure it was a surprise and I also wondered how they could charge so much? but I have heard of others in othe locations charge with the same speed! Shoes, La Isla, las Palmas area stores? (They were told this)-also walmart?? maybe stereos and cameras???? Remember they are specialist at this!!!

One purchase was even gas for their car!! Don't they have cameras?

(which also lead me to remember about all the cameras supposedly installed last year ($) Thats another day and another subject too I guess but I am wanting to investigate that too???

AR

Not to get off topic but at FA the reserved chair thing supposedly stopped last Feb. Any towel left unattended is removed and returned to guest services.

Now I imagine you get your towels back after complaining but I like the policy. I get my spot when I'm ready to hit the pool or playa and not before.

And as to why they had a CC or debit card at the pool the ATM is located just a few steps from the main pool area so perhaps they had just gotten $$ and went directly to there chairs? Another good reason to look around ANywhere when using an ATM.

If they told the credit card company they were in Mexico, the company will let the charges through until advised it was stolen.
