Bus ride from Oaxaca City to Huatulco and new highway

I'm interested in taking the bus from Oaxaca city to Huatulco. Based on the older posts, it sounded like a treacherous journey. But one post from Jan 2006 mentioned that they were building a new highway. Has that been built yet? Also, there were different routes - I heard that going through Salina Cruz wasn't that bad. Is that true? Also, is taking the bus safe for two women traveling together?

Apparently the new highway has NOT been built and is nowhere near completion. The route via Salina Cruz is much longer in distance but that is the route the first-class buses take (around 8 hours). Even this route has some mountainous bits but nowhere near as bad as the route directly south which involves a 4 hour stretch of nothing but bends (total time around 6 hours). At least the scenery is spectacular! The latter can be done by bus or in a shared van. You shouldn't have any safety issues.
