It's not so much that there isn't a downtown, it's just that there's more than one, and they're all smallish.

The hotel zone is located in a suburb of Manzanillo, called Salagua. Salagua has it's own downtown-y area, where there's a mall and a bunch of big-box stores and chain restaurants. Also, there's a stretch of beach of Manzanillo bay, with some great restaurants (I like Aguachile, but there are a ton of them).

South of Salagua is the city of Manzanillo. As FUBOB says, there is a main downtown, in the city of Manzanillo called the Centro, and it's about a 20 or 25 minute drive to get there. It's where the cruise ship dock is located, and there are lots of little stores and restaurants, and a giant blue sailfish statue that always makes for good pictures.

North of Salagua is a suburb called Santiago, and there, you'll find Playa Miramar. This is a long stretch of beach with a row of restaurants along it, as well as an artist's market and an indoor flea market. Fantastic boogieboarding and great food at several beachfront restaurants; you really can't go wrong.

Take the time to visit Manzanillo

If you are looking for curio shops etc, then Downtown manz may not be your best bet.

But...............do yourself a favor and head on in to town. The main square (with the sail fish) is a shadow of its former glory. For some reason all the trees were cut down and the square is now a little sterile looking.

Head towards the main market, about 4 blocks from the square. There is a mountain that divides the town so just walk until you find a street that gets through.

You can grab a bite at colonial hotel or grab a bite on the second floor of the market.

There are many other small local eating establishements around.

Valle also has a market with food stalls around.

as mentioned Miramar has some good eats and trinkets to buy.
